The nine proposals of the Government to fight against the sixth wave of the coronavirus

The Conference of Presidents that will be held online this Wednesday has begun with the nine proposals of the Government to face the sixth wave of Covid-19. In his speech from the Senate, the President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, has launched a call for calm and has said that “the omicron variant can be attacked with a booster dose“.

However, the limitation that has stood out the most has been the return of the mask outdoors, just six months after this restriction was lowered. These are the measures proposed by the head of government, who at this extraordinary meeting of presidents before Christmas emulated his American counterpart, Joe Biden, recalling that “we are not like in 2020” because “the vaccines have worked.”

Mandatory outdoor masks

On Saturday, June 26, the Government abolished the mandatory nature of outdoor masks if a distance of 1.5 meters could be maintained with people who were not living together. Six months later, in the midst of the maelstrom of the sixth wave of coronavirus and days before Christmas, it goes back and recovers the previous restriction.

Health personnel reinforcements

The Executive has announced at the Conference its intention to hire retired and pre-retired healthcare personnel, as well as the authorization to hire professionals with a specialist degree obtained in non-EU member states, in a week marked by the controversial words of the Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso about the health professionals of the community. “In some health centers they don’t pick up the phones, they hang up, suddenly there are no doctors,” he said on Es Radio.

Armed forces

The Government will reinforce vaccination devices against covid-19 with vaccination devices and equipment from the Armed Forces. Likewise, it will make available hospitals of the Military Health Network, as sources from Moncloa have transferred to El Periódico de España.

Intensify vaccination

The Executive is committed to reinforcing and accelerating the vaccination process against the coronavirus, for which the following objectives are established:

  • 80% of the population between 60-69 years vaccinated with a third dose before the end of the year.

  • 80% between 50-59 years old in the week of January 24.

  • 80% between 40-49 years old in the first week of March.

  • 70% with the first pediatric dose in the week of February 7.

  • 70% with the second pediatric dose in the week of April 19.

Primary and community care

of available health professionals and to improve their working conditions, up to reduce temporary employment to below 8%. The General State Budgets will allocate 292 million euros for this plan, most of which will be transferred to the autonomous communities.

antigen test

Temporary authorizations will be issued to allow pharmacies to sell certain antigen tests for professional use so that they are available to the entire population, as claimed by the General Council of Pharmaceutical Colleges to face the “shortage” of these tests.

Covid Certificate

As approved by the European Commission, as of February 1, 2022, the European covid certificate will reduce its validity period to nine months from the date the last dose of the covid-19 vaccine was administered.

As the Public Health Commission of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) made public yesterday, where the Government and the autonomous communities are represented, people who have had direct contact with an infected person, omicron or any another variant, they should not quarantine in case of being vaccinated with complete schedule.

Presidents conferences

The presidents of the autonomous communities and the Government will meet periodically “while this sixth wave lasts”, as confirmed by sources from Moncloa to El Periódico de España.
