The OCU warns about the danger of a supposedly healthy product: a lot of salt and fat


That cooked ham that you add to your diet every day, and which you sometimes overuse, may not be as good for your health as you think.

It is likely that many foods that you have added to your healthy diet are not as good for your health as you think, and it is that, for example, cooked ham is always one of the favorite foods when feeding children, the elderly or we even incorporate it into our diets before or after the gym, or if we want to lose weight.

But now the OCU, in a recent study, comes to throw away many of the excellences of cooked ham since they consider that most of the products that are sold in supermarkets they have a cooked ham that is salty.

In the OCU report they have reached certain conclusions. On the one hand, they affirm that 24 of the 25 cooked ham products that they have analyzed have an excessive amount of salt. On the other hand, these products they have more fat than you thinksome even hovering around 10% fat.

And it is that when we go to the supermarket and buy cooked ham, we not only take ham. For example, the extra cooked ham, which is of the highest quality, the meat content is between 82 and 98%.

You also have to look at the quality of the meat, since not everything is meat that glittersbut there are also additives such as collagen, which denotes the use of less noble parts of the pig, such as cartilage.

Also there is a lot of added water that is added to the ham through the brineand some of these hams add carbohydrates to the list of ingredients.

Obviously these hams have additivessuch as phosphates, whose main function is to increase the water retention of the product, but there are also preservatives, antioxidants, texture agents or flavor enhancers.

In his comparison, 25 brands of extra category cooked hams have been selectedwhich is the highest quality, and they have been analyzed at an accredited laboratory to find out their composition, in addition to a panel of expert judges who have carried out a tasting.

In the study, the best cooked ham stands out for the one sold by Mercadona under Hacendado, with a score of 73 considering that it is of very good quality, and at a price of €8.95 per kilo.

In second position is Nuestra Alacena de Día (thin slices), with a score of 66 for good quality, and a reference price of €7.22 per kilo.

The third cooked ham with the best score is the Aldi fine slices table with a score of 63 of good quality, with a reference price of €6.20 per kilo.

They conclude that cooked ham is not as healthy a product as it is thoughtso its consumption should be occasional, prioritizing other alternatives such as dairy products or fruits.
