The pandemic and the chip crisis take car sales to a minimum in the province of Alicante

The automobile market of the province can not take flight, after the blow caused by the pandemic in 2020. The uncertainty on the economic situation, the lack of tourists foreigners -which has slowed down the purchases of rental companies- and, above all, delays in the delivery of vehicles due to the so-called ‘chip crisis‘have caused 2021 to close with a new drop in the number of registrations of the province, which is at its lowest level in at least a decade.

Thus, according to the data released this Monday by the main associations in the sector -Faconauto, Ganvam and Anfac-, far from the improvement expected at the beginning of the year, the number of cars and SUVs sold in Alicante stood at 32,455 units during 2021, which represented a drop of 2.44%. A figure that would have been bearable on its own, but that adds to the crash of the previous year, with which the volume of transactions was actually 48.5% lower than that registered before the pandemica.

In fact, it is about the number of registrations lowest in the historical series by provinces that Faconauto offers on its website, which dates back to 2011. The previous minimum occurred in 2012 -the worst year of the economic crisis caused by the bursting of the real estate bubble-, when 36,352 cars were sold in the province.

The figure is even worse than that registered at the national level, where registrations grew a timid 1%, also far from the initial forecasts and 2019 sales.

In this sense, it should be noted that not even the good progress of the enrollment of hybrid and electric vehicless -which doubled, to exceed 10,400 units- managed to change the general trend of the market.

In this sense, the dealer and manufacturer organizations themselves acknowledge that the figure would have been even worse, if it were not for the self-registrations that many sellers have made and without the advance purchases that some have made to avoid the increase in the registration tax from this point on. January 1 and that, as calculated, will mean an average rise of 5% in the price of vehicles.

Less purchases from individuals

By segments, the data from Faconauto, Ganvam and Anfac show that they were the individuals those that most contracted car purchases last year in the province, with a decrease of 13.25%. On the other hand, company and renting fleets fell only 0.6% and registrations for rent-a-car companies improved by 22.7%, mainly focused on the tourist market. Of course, the total number of acquisitions of the latter -8,720- is barely a third of those registered before the pandemic, which gives an idea of the ceiling that still remains to be recovered.

The lack of chips causes most automobile plants to find their production very reduced, which causes delays of several months in the delivery of many models.
