The Parliament of Catalonia has approved this Wednesday a resolution that urges to avoid “as a general criterion” the participation of the Mossos d’Esquadra riot police in the evictions of vulnerable people. A proposal of the commons in the Interior commission, which has had the votes in favor of Junts and ERC -parties that make up the Government-, the abstention of the CUP, and the rejection of Vox, Cs and PP.

The text, which for the anti-system supposes a “step back” after the amendments presented by the Republicans and Junts, advocates the creation of a protocol for action by the Catalan police in evictions. «We want the Department of the Interior to regulate the intervention of the Mossos in the evictions of vulnerable families«, has indicated the deputy of the comuns Marc Parés.

The truth is that the Interior “is already working” on the drafting of a protocol, but this does not mention, according to Parés, the actions of the anti-riot units -Brimo and ARRO- in them, while the intention of this formation, like the CUP, is that they are “excluded.” This, which has been the second point of the motion, has had the vote against PSC-Units, which has supported the other two: the one that proposes that it be another parliamentary commission, the one that studies the police model, the one that reviews this protocol, and the one that advocates preserving the right to housing.

Your representative in the Interior Committee, Ramon Espadaler, has censured that the introductory letter of the proposal speaks of “violence” when referring to police action, and has recalled that the agents “make a justified use of force and with proportionate parameters”. In addition, he has criticized that a parliamentary resolution intends to decide the police action during an eviction, when it must follow “technical criteria”.

Faced with the clamor of ERC, Junts and comuns about the need to guarantee the right to housing, the Vox deputy Sergio Macian has urged respect for the right to property. «We must fight against the phenomenon of illegal occupation. Guaranteeing a roof to vulnerable people is an obligation of the administration”, he stated.

For his part, the representative of the CUP, Xavier Pellicer, has reproached the Government for its “step back”, since to guarantee the investiture of Pere Aragonès, the anti-system already demanded that the riot police not act in the evictions. An “unfulfilled” pact.

While the PP and Cs have censored the resolution proposal, which the orange party deputy Matias Alonso has called an “anti-police offensive. When they talk about the right to housing, it seems that they are talking about the right to occupation”, he opined. Also the popular Lorena Roldán, who has voted against, has indicated that the elaboration of a protocol that regulates the performance of the Mossos in evictions must be debated in the commission on the police model.
