“Dune” was the big winner at the 2022 BAFTAs with five wins in the craft categories. Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, and her lead Benedict Cumberbatch collected the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for “King Richard.”
The evening was otherwise star-studded, with a full house at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who was at her irreverent best. Her targets included the Royal family and 10 Downing Street.
The ongoing war in Ukraine was also acknowledged on at least three occasions during the awards evening. Wilson, while introducing Emilia Jones’ performance of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from “CODA,” said that the song was described in both ASL and BSL but added a sign of her own – a middle finger to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Andy Serkis, prior to announcing the best director BAFTA for Campion, made reference to U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel’s slowness in welcoming Ukrainian refugees to Britain.
The evening began with BAFTA chair Krishnendu Majumdar paying homage to the people of Ukraine and to all those covering the war, many of whom are BAFTA members.
A musical highlight of the evening was British musical treasure Shirley Bassey launching the festivities with a rousing rendition of the title song from James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever,” for which she received a standing ovation from the capacity crowd.
Wilson’s quips included: “You guys might be like ‘Why is Rebel Wilson hosting the BAFTAs?’ I come from the bush, but if you think about it don’t we all,”? Wilson asked.
Referring to her weight loss, Wilson said: “Since 2020, I’ve done quite a transformation. I hope J.K. Rowling still approves.”
“I’m so excited I can play the non-funny love interest in an Adam Sandler movie,” Wilson said.
Turning her attention to the latest box office hits, Wilson noted that “‘The Batman’ is set to become the biggest movie. Ironic that one man and a bat started the whole thing…”
“Hot Fuzz” star Simon Pegg presented the first award of the evening, for Special Visual Effects, which went to “Dune.”
RuPaul and Naomi Campbell presented the next award, for cinematography, to Greig Fraser for “Dune.”
Lucy Boynton and Kevin Harrison Jr. presented the best editing BAFTA to Tom Cross and Elliot Graham for “No Time to Die” and the sound BAFTA to Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Doug Hemphill, Theo Green and Ron Bartlett for “Dune.”
Asim Chaudhry presented the BAFTA for original score to Hans Zimmer for “Dune.” Zimmer is on tour and was therefore unable to collect the award in person.
Conrad Khan and Shalon Brune-Franklin presented the BAFTA for makeup and hair to Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram and Justin Raleigh for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and casting to Cindy Tolan for “West Side Story.”
Kenneth Branagh presented the BAFTA for outstanding debut film by a British writer, director or producer to Jeymes Samuel for “The Harder They Fall.”
The EE Rising Star award was presented by 2021 winner Bukky Bakray and Lady Gaga to Lashana Lynch for “No Time to Die.”
“Yesterday” star Himesh Patel presented the supporting actress BAFTA to Ariana DeBose for “West Side Story.”
Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley presented the costume design BAFTA to Jenny Beavan for “Cruella,” but she couldn’t be present to collect the award.
Presenting the award for film not in the English language was Léa Seydoux and the BAFTA went to “Drive My Car,” with director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi being present in person to collect the award.
Millie Bobby Brown and Florence Pugh presented the supporting actor BAFTA to Troy Kotsur for “CODA,” who joked that it was time for a deaf James Bond.
Emma Watson presented the BAFTA for outstanding British film to the “Belfast” team.
Daisy Ridley presented the adapted screenplay award BAFTA to Siân Heder for ‘CODA’ while Sienna Miller presented the original screenplay BAFTA to “Licorice Pizza.” Paul Thomas Anderson could not be present to collect the award.
Wunmi Mosaku presented the documentary BAFTA to the “Summer of Soul” team.
Sophie Okonedo and Naomi Ackie presented the production design BAFTA to the “Dune” team.
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan presented the BAFTA for animated film to the “Encanto” team.
Salma Hayek presented the leading actor BAFTA, which was won by Will Smith for “King Richard.”
Andy Serkis presented the director BAFTA, which was won by the absent Jane Campion, to her lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch for “The Power of the Dog.”
Daniel Kaluuya presented the leading actress award to Joanna Scanlan for “After Love.”
The final award of the evening, the best film BAFTA, was presented by Tom Hiddleston to “The Power of the Dog” team.
The most celebrated event in the British film industry calendar returned for its first live edition since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The last BAFTA Awards took place on Feb. 2, 2020, with COVID-19 a distant concern for most attendees. Last year’s event was largely virtual, with an in-person studio in place for a select group of presenters. It was also the beginning of a troubled chapter for BAFTA, which gave an outstanding contribution to cinema award to actor Noel Clarke during the televised ceremony — just weeks before numerous women came forward alleging sexual harassment against the actor.
BAFTA, which has since conducted a review into its special awards process, this year skipped any non-competitive awards altogether, including its prestigious BAFTA Fellowship and Outstanding Contribution to Cinema.
This year’s awards marked the second edition of the BAFTAs since the institute’s groundbreaking diversity review in 2020.
