The Popular Party has been made this afternoon with the mayor of Torremolinos (Malaga, 68,661 inhabitants). Margarita del Cid, spokesperson for the municipal group and candidate for the last elections, is the new mayor when a motion of censure that she presented on December 2 was successful. To achieve this, he has needed the votes of the representatives of Ciudadanos and Vox, as well as the non-attached councilors Avelina González and Nicolás de Miguel. The popular ones, who were the most voted list in the last municipal ones, thus unseat the socialist José Ortiz, who ruled since 2015 and was invested in 2019 thanks to the surprising support of Lucía Cuín a few days after being expelled from Vox for participating in an act of Pride.

The motion of censure has been debated for more than two hours in a plenary session held this morning. “Today we choose between the Torremolinos of democratic memory versus the Torremolinos of the uprising. Of the LGTBI flag in front of Torremolinos of the imperial eagle ”, said the socialist Maribel Tocón before the votes, which have awarded a 13 to 12 for Del Cid who, with the necessary support, is already mayor. “Fulfilling the dream of your life is not the end of any path, it is the beginning of everything; and today everything begins. Thank you, Torremolinos ”, expressed on Twitter who also acts as vice president of the Malaga Provincial Council and CEO of Costa del Sol Tourism.

In addition to the support of Ciudadanos and Vox, the Popular Party has needed the change of mind of Avelina González, until a few weeks ago, councilor of the local party For my people, which in spring 2019 supported the PSOE. In December, however, he assured that he had been wrong: “Undermining the bridges that I had with the PP was a complete mistake. Now is the time to create those connecting ties ”. Shortly after, she was expelled from her party, Por mi Pueblo, whose local president is Pedro Fernández Montes, who led the City Council for two decades under the ranks of the PP.

Avelina González is not the only non-attached councilor in the municipality. There are two more. On the one hand, so is Nicolás de Miguel, who was Citizens’ candidate for mayor in spring 2019. However, shortly afterwards he would leave the orange formation due to his disagreement with Albert Rivera and, although he came to serve as Councilor for Equality in the socialist government team finally abandoned it. Likewise, Lucía Cuín, who came to the elections in the Vox candidacy but was expelled from the party days later for participating in an act of Pride in the municipality, acts as an unaffiliated member. His vote, together with that of Por mi Pueblo and Adelante Málaga, was crucial for José Ortiz to take over the mayor of Torremolinos in 2019.

The Popular Party returns to govern this municipality six years after losing the mayor’s office and reinforces its power on the Costa del Sol, where it also directs Malaga, Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola and Nerja. Among the main steps that Margarita Del Cid will have to take are those related to the approval of the General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU), recently annulled by the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA) for lacking the Strategic Environmental Assessment document. The new mayor has ensured that her team will be a “solid government where citizens will be reflected.” “They are going to have the best that we can give them: work, work and work, what has been lacking in this municipality in the last six years”, he has sentenced.
