The reality behind air fryers

Potatoes in a fryer without oil / er

Frying without oil is impossible, however the alternative that has been born with the ‘air fryer’ has been a revolution. But what really happens to food cooked in the air fryer? This is all you have to know

A healthy alternative to the classic ‘fritanga’. This is how they sold us the air fryers and raise your hand if you don’t already have one at home. French fries without the need to use liters of oil? Breaded steaks without that greasy taste? Impossible not to fall into temptation. But what do these ‘air fryers’ really do to food? Fry, of course, no. That ‘deep fryer’ without oil should not lead us directly to the false idea that we are getting fried food.

This appliance, as its name suggests, cooks food with hot air. It is a cooking process that is achieved through a hot air circulation system, so they have nothing to do with conventional fryers, what is more, they are much more similar to an oven, although much faster due to the concentration from air.

When it comes to cooking in the ‘air fryer’ there is a clear difference, then, between two types of food: those that have their own fat and those that do not. When you cook foods that release their own fat, as is the case with meat, they fry thanks to their fat when cooked above 180 degrees. But when the food does not have fat, for example some potatoes, then they recommend dipping them in oil beforehand.

How much do the ‘air fryer’ consume?

If we compare these air fryers with an oven, which is really the most similar, we can see that they reduce consumption in two key aspects: electricity consumption and savings in the shopping cart.

The power of the oven is greater, it usually reaches about 3000 watts, and the space to be heated is much larger, so the cooking time is increased. The air fryer, however, heats a much smaller space at a very high power, around 1,500 watts, so it is considerably faster.

In addition, it is obvious that by using less oil (in many cases of non-greasy foods it is enough to spray with a spray), they represent an economic saving in the shopping basket, and hey, that also helps the pocket at the end of the month.

Are air fryers a really healthy alternative?

Experts point out that by practically not using oil, the calories we consume are fewer, so yes, they are healthier than frying in a conventional way. However, some point out that to cook certain vegetables it will always be better to steam them. Nutritionist Adriana Martín believes that this machine «allows cooking with less calories, it is fast and the food acquires a very good flavor and texture. I think it is an interesting tool, although not essential.

Among the advantages of air fryers, in addition to low consumption, speed and calories, the absence of odors stands out. In short, if you are looking for a healthy alternative to fried foods such as potatoes, the air fryer is the solution. But it is not the only thing you can cook with this appliance. You can also prepare everything from cakes to fish, pizzas, croquettes… The only limit to preparing recipes with the air fryer is your culinary creativity.
