The Spanish suspend the government’s management of the pandemic

  • Direct Coronavirus Spain today, breaking news

The barometer on the image of Spain presented this Thursday by the Elcano Royal Institute reflects that the country obtains a better image abroad than among its own citizens regarding the work carried out by the Government in the fight against the pandemic of covid-19.

The results of the ninth wave of the barometer, which have just been known, indicate that, among the countries consulted, Spain obtains a score of 5.9 points out of 10 in this aspect, only behind Germany (6,5) and with a higher note than Russia, China, UK Y USA, which is the only one that fails in the management of the pandemic, with a 4.2. Thus, the director of the Spanish Image Observatory of the Elcano Royal Institute Carmen Gonzlez, which is in charge of the study, has pointed out that Spain has not suffered “a deterioration” of its “international image” due to the management of the pandemic.

The barometer has been carried out based on a total of 4,400 questionnaires made to 400 citizens of: Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, the United States, China, India, South Korea and also Spain, where they have only answered questions about self-esteem of the Spanish. The interviews were conducted between January 27 and February 1, 2021.

In this sense, when asking the Spaniards about the assessment of the Government’s action in the fight against the pandemic, the result drops to suspended (4.8), although the report points out that this note is “not very representative” since it hides a “great internal dispersion” of the valuations and is explained by the “lowering of self-esteem” of Spaniards produced by the “current economic crisis” that makes them value themselves “below” what they are valued “outside” as “already happened” in the period of “the previous crisis”, according to Gonzlez.

Regarding Spanish self-esteem, the barometer details that within Spain they have found a image “much more negative about herself”, in which elements such as “corruption“, the “weakness” and the “poverty“They occupy very high positions, in” clear opposition “to the features with which Spain is perceived outside its borders.

For example, 64% of Spaniards define the country as corrupt compared to 27% of Europeans who think that about Spain; More than half, 52% see Spain as weak (25% of Europeans), and 62% consider it poor (43% of Europeans). Another worrying feature is the high percentage (41%) that defines Spain as a idle country, instead of worker, well above the European average (25%).

Lowers the valuation of Spain

The study also reflects a decrease in the general assessment that citizens make of foreign countries, including Spain, to which Europeans place a note of 6.3 while in the previous wave of barometer results, carried out in 2018, it reached 7.1. However, Spain maintains its relative position in second place, behind Germany, surpassing Italy, France and the United Kingdom.

The most valued aspects of Spain by foreigners are its quality as tourist destination (7.8) and food (7.3) while political life (6.2) and that it is a good country to invest (6,0) get the worst score. In the sample as a whole, Spain appears as a religious and traditional country, democratic, strong, peaceful, hard-working, tolerant, honest, caring, trustworthy, richer than poor and more urban than rural.

Among Europeans, Spain is more highly valued in Italy and Portugal, who identify it more frequently as rich, democratic and modern. On the contrary, the Netherlands has the worst image of Spain in Western Europe, in “great contrast” to the “idyllic” image that the Spanish have of them.

Climate change

Spain agrees with the average of the other countries surveyed in considering the fight against climate change as the most urgent goal for foreign policy. In Spain it is closely followed by the objective of development aid, which has “notably” increased its support, possibly due to the “high number of arrivals from irregular immigrants“to the Canary Islands in the period that the survey was carried out, given the” connection “that the Spanish” public opinion “makes between development aid and the” containment “of irregular immigration.

At this point, the report clarifies that the questionnaire did not offer the fight against covid-19 as a possible answer, which “without a doubt” would have occupied the “first place” in this edition of the survey and this has been done to avoid this temporary phenomenon to be able to compare the results with previous editions of the barometer.

Autonomous ms

Elcano’s barometer also asked citizens of the European Union about their preferences regarding proposals for greater autonomy from the EU to depend less on other powers and the results have indicated that the most urgent objective is to increase the autonomous digital compared to large digital companies, all from the United States.

This is seen as more urgent than increasing trade economic autonomy vis-à-vis China and defense autonomy vis-à-vis the United States, which comes in third place. Spain is the country that is least concerned about this last point (11%), compared to the average of 18% countries, something that according to Gonzlez shows “little awareness” regarding possible military threats.

Finally, the study reflects a strong aversion to Chinese investments globally. It is the most prominent option when asking which country would prefer not to invest in its own while equity investments from the United States and Germany remain the favorites. Spanish investments rank last on both lists: few prefer them, but few oppose them.
