The UCO returns to investigate Marcos Maynar from Extremadura for drug trafficking

Agents of the Civil Guard have intervened in the physiology laboratory of the University of Extremadura in Cáceres in search of evidence and ramifications of sports doping are not ruled out

The Civil Guard once again puts the Extremaduran doctor Marcos Maynar in the spotlight. The agents have once again launched an operation against the Extremaduran who has been investigated in several cases of sports doping. Members of the UCO have searched the physiology laboratory of the University of Extremadura, which Maynar directs and in whose teaching center he has been working for more than two decades.

Marcos Maynar Mariño is a doctor in sports medicine with the thesis ‘Metabolic physiology of professional cycling’. His career as an adviser linked to sport covers a wide range of services related to doping.

The latest news that related to the doctor from Extremadura with doping is from the year 2015 when he had to testify in a trial in Bilbao for the operation ‘Operación Estrobo’ in which he was accused of being the alleged leader of a doping network of the team of rowers from Bermeo (Vizcaya) in the 2010 season. During the trial, one of the witnesses testified that Mainar was at the rowing club for two days and told them that “he was there to help win La Concha” and that if he didn’t achieved, “he would not charge anything”.

In addition to the traineras, he has worked for football clubs, such as Cacereño, or basketball, such as Cáceres.

Other investigations

For more than two decades, his name has been circulating in sports gossip, in the style of more famous doctors such as Michele Ferrari or Eufemiano Fuentes.

In May 2008, the cyclist Bruno Neves, of the LA-MSS, a Portuguese team with which Maynar collaborated, died. Law enforcement officers investigated the doctor and records of cyclists with training plans and administration of anabolic steroids and EPO were found.

In 2008, the German television ADR broadcast a report in which it said that Maynar had sent emails to ten cycling teams in which he offered his services to carry out periodic controls in order to evaluate their physiological parameters with techniques identical to those used by the UCI in your biological passport.
