Since leaving the Berlin Chancellery, Angela Merkel he has enjoyed in total discretion much more time at his disposal. But that could change if the UN chief gets his way and the tab as adviser at the United Nations. António Guterres would like to sign the highly reputable 67-year-old politician and has already made a concrete offer, according to the German Press Agency (DPA) citing UN circles. Guterres has tempted Merkel, who is still active and said that she would not work for any international political organization in the future, with the chair of a high-level advisory body on global public goods, which should potentially serve the entire world population and across national borders.

Examples of global public goods are the ozone layer, but also, the rules of international application, such as those relating to the safety of flights and global trade. This is what explains the letter that has arrived in Berlin from New York, addressed to the former German chancellor. Merkel does not comment on the offer nor has she made any response public and the chances that she will accept the job offer at the UN headquarters, on New York’s East River, are considered low, because fate would collide with the labor interests of her husband, Joachim Sauer, more linked to Europe.

At the moment, Angela Merkel enjoys an office in Berlin with nine employees endowed by the Bundestag, as befits a former German chancellor, which allows her to organize her own agenda and from which she would not want to be separated. Several of his closest collaborators continue to work on it during the four legislatures he was in power and he will surely take them all into account when assessing this offer.

Guterres assumed his second term at the head of the UN at the beginning of January and this Advisory Board on Global Public Goods, whose leadership he now offers to Merkel, is one of the emblematic projects of his reform of the United Nations. On page 4 of his report on UN change last year, the secretary-general wrote: “I will ask a high-level advisory board led by former heads of state and government to identify global public goods and other areas of common interest where improvements in leadership are most needed.” According to Guterres, the coronavirus pandemic has revealed large gaps in international cooperation. The planned advisory body should promote the renewal of practices and principles of action at a global level, a task that could be attractive to their interests and that could fit into their future plans, which the former German chancellor has left very open. During one of her last trips to the United States, Merkel declared that her new stage “I think I will like it a lot” and announced that she wanted to dedicate time to “what really interests me”. “After that, maybe I’ll try to read something, then my eyes will close because I’m tired, then I’ll get some sleep and at the end we’ll see where I appear.”
