The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, pointed out that before the intention of the United Kingdom to join the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), the three partner countries should review the listing.

After the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, indicated that his country is analyzing the possibility of joining the T-MEC, the Mexican president said in his morning conference: “This must be seen with all the actors. I am in favor of maintaining this agreement. I think it was a very important achievement that those who did not want the treaty to be ratified were convinced ”.

López Obrador added: “What we know is that the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union and they are seeking bilateral relations, a bilateral treaty, with the United States; There is also information that they would like to belong to the treaty that we have in North America ”.

The president took the opportunity to highlight the importance of the T-MEC for Mexico: “If you ask me on what he bases his economic optimism – to grow at a rate greater than 6% -, in addition to the discipline and honesty in the management of the finances, I would tell them in the treaty because that attracts investment, and companies arrive, jobs are created and we have a safe market for the sale of merchandise“, Held.

He stressed that the treaty is very important for the automotive and auto parts industry, as well as for the “permanent growth” of industries linked to exports.

This week Boris Johnson spoke about the possibility of analyzing the accession of the United Kingdom to the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada, as an option to strengthen its foreign trade after leaving the European Union (Brexit).

Although there is the possibility that a fourth country will join the T-MEC, it would be a process that would take time, according to expert analysts in the field.

López Obrador took advantage of the moment and the topic to talk about the union of the countries of America: “If the United Kingdom is proposing that it wants to associate, Why don’t the countries of America join us?”, Said the president, highlighting the natural resources, the workforce and the size of the market in the continent.
