The first vaccinations against Covid-19 in the US will occur in less than a month, according to the head of the Trump Administration’s program to get the vaccine. Moncef Slaoui, the so-called ‘czar’ of the vaccine against this coronavirus, was chosen by Donald Trump to lead ‘Operation Warp Speed’, the program created in spring to obtain the vaccine from the quickest way.
Slaoui assured this Sunday on CNN that he hopes that the first vaccinations will take place immediately after the meeting of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, in its acronym in English) on December 10, in which it will be decided on the authorization of the first vaccines that have demonstrated effectiveness. Developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, which requested emergency approval from the FDA last Friday, it has been 95% effective. Moderna’s, which has not yet asked for approval, is 94.5% effective in its preliminary studies. Moderna obtained funding from the Trump Administration for its vaccine, while Pfizer and BioNTech did so without public money. They have signed a contract for its production for the USA.
“Our plan is to be able to send vaccines to immunization centers within 24 hours of approval“He said about the FDA decision. So I hope that maybe on the second day after approval, by December 11 or 12, immunize the first people in the US., in all the states, in the areas in which the Health Departments of the states tell us that we must deliver the vaccine. Each state will determine vaccination priorities, but the first to receive it are expected to be those most at risk with Covid-19 and medical and emergency workers.
If Slaoui is correct in his prognosis, the start of the vaccination will be somewhat better than originally planned, which placed him in late December or early next year. The impact of vaccination on the epidemic will still take many months, as planned. For there to be “true herd immunity,” Slaoui said, with close to the 70% of Americans immunized, we will have to wait “Until approximately May”. It will be then when the normality lost by the pandemic can begin to recover.
Following Slaoui’s statements, the main medical authority of the US Government on coronavirus, Anthony Fauci, acknowledged on CBS that he agreed that there could be herd immunity in May but that, for this, there should be a high percentage of vaccinated. «If only a small percentage, 40% or 50% get the vaccine, you’re not going to get enough herd immunity. ‘ According to a recent Gallup study, only 58% of Americans would agree to get a vaccine, even if it is FDA-cleared and free.
