The average price of electricity for regulated rate customers linked to the wholesale market will drop 11.69% this Thursday compared to this Wednesday, up to 193.01 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), for which it is reduced for the second consecutive day.

In the auction, the average price of electricity in the wholesale market –the so-called ‘pool’– will stand this Wednesday at 132.13 euros/MWh, so it remains at a level similar to the price for today ( 132.74 euros/MWh), according to data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) collected by Europa Press.

peak and off-peak hours

  • The cheapest: from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. €0.21333/kWh
  • The most expensive: from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. €0.35692/kWh

To this price of the ‘pool’ is added the compensation of 60.88 euros/MWh to the gas companies (a figure that is still provisional and that usually varies compared to the definitive one), compared to the 85.81 euros/MWh registered for today, Wednesday.

This compensation must be paid by the consumers who benefit from the measure, the consumers of the regulated rate (PVPC) or those who, despite being in the free market, have an indexed rate.

Compared to a year ago, the price of electricity for customers of the regulated rate for this Thursday is 105.57% more than the 93.89 euros/MWh that the ‘pool’ marked on average on June 30, 2021.

In this way, the average electricity price for regulated rate customers linked to the wholesale market closed June at an average of 218.29 euros/MWh, that is, 16.65% more than in May (187.12 euros /MWh on average) and 162.05% more than in the same month of 2021 (83.3 euros).

With these records, June closes as the third month with the most expensive average electricity price in the historical series, only surpassed by December 2021 (239.17 euros/MWh on average) and March of this year (283.3 euros).

The Iberian mechanism, which entered into force on June 15, limits the price of gas for electricity generation to an average of 48.8 euros per MWh over a period of twelve months, thus covering the coming winter, a period in which energy prices are more expensive.

Specifically, the ‘Iberian exception’ sets a path for natural gas for electricity generation at a price of 40 euros/MWh in the initial six months, and subsequently, a monthly increase of five euros/MWh until the end of the measure .
