These are the health benefits of chewing gum

It only takes a walk through the streets of one of the Spanish cities to realize that the amount of chewing gum consumed in our country. Sidewalks and roads are awash with gum that was once chewed and thrown on the ground. An action that makes clear the lack of education and that, without a doubt, we should change.

Contrary to what many people think, chewing gum is not an action that was born in our times, nor in recent centuries. In fact, chewing gum has thousands of years old. Neolithic humans already chewed a birch resin gum.

When used in excess, over time, they can cause muscle contraction and headaches, earaches, and toothaches.

Chewing gum can be an ally in some circumstances in which we do not have the possibility to brush our teeth, for example, after eating out. The chewing gum helps clean the mouth of food debris and sugars. But, in addition, it neutralizes plaque acids and serves to stimulate the enamel remineralization and saliva secretion, which, with its antibacterial properties, is the most important factor our mouths have in maintaining good oral health.

What kind of gum?

One of the most important factors to take into account if we are going to consume gum is that does not contain sugar and that it does contain xylitol, a sweetener that reduces cavities by inhibiting the development of the main bacteria: streptococcus mutans.

Chewing gum that does contain sugar, on the other hand, is not a good option, as bacteria can easily transform this carbohydrate into acids that are harmful to our teeth.

Once we know what type of chewing gum is the most suitable, we can benefit from other advantages that they offer us. Among them, we can highlight the de-stress effect they possess, as it helps calm anxiety and mitigates mental fatigue.

Chewing can also be positive for increase concentration and activate the mind. Another very propitious time to consume chewing gum is during plane travel, because they help unclog our ears. It can also happen on a road trip where we change altitude.

After a meal, in addition to helping to cleanse the mouth, chewing gum also provides us with a more refreshing breath. This is especially relevant for people who suffer from halitosis. On the other hand, people trying to lose weight can use this resource to reduce appetite and thus avoid overeating.

Finally, it remains to mention the use that people who plant tobacco battle make of chewing gum. Some resort to nicotine gum, but regular gum can also help get rid of the habit of smoking.
