The new giant of SeatMartorell measure over eight feet tall and weighs three tons. Many of the parts of a car weigh hundreds of kilos by themselves, so when assembling them, the weight is multiplied. “To be able to transport and assemble the bulkiest parts of the car and for its structure not to suffer in the least, it was necessary to use a larger robot”, he says. The new Martorell robot, almost three meters high, It is capable of assembling three of the heaviest parts of vehicles (those on the side), weighing almost 400 kilos.

The Martorell plant already has two units of these giant robots, who work in parallel in sheet metal work together with other 2.200 robots 2.200 robotsin all the facilities and coordinated with a total of 1,700 workers to manufacture the bodywork of a car every 68 seconds. The incorporation of these two giant robots simplifies part of the car assembly process and reduces the space occupied by the manufacturing line. “These robots assemble fundamental assemblies of the vehicle, such as the sides. By being able to lift more weight, they perform two operations at the same time, increasing the quality of the parts,” explains Pozanco.

It should be noted that Seat has two other robots that are capable of transporting up to 700 kilograms. However, they are four meters taller than the new Martorell giants, which with two and a half meters they are capable of carrying 400 kilograms of weight. “There is a relationship between the weight that the robot can carry and the reach. That is, it is not the same to hold a bucket of water with your arm next to your body than with your arm extended. This giant can transport 400 kilos at almost four meters of its central axis “, affirms Pozanco. Getting the same robot to join the three pieces on the side and be able to transfer them to the welding area without any other robot having to manipulate them again is a novelty. This has been achieved thanks to the incorporation of a linear axis that allows it to travel up to four meters.

Finally, it should be noted that the robots have implemented software that allows remotely monitor all your operating data, such as the consumption of the engines, the temperature, the engine torque or the accelerations. “With the analysis of this data we can anticipate any unforeseen event. That is, predictive maintenance is carried out, with which we manage to ensure quality and precision on a continuous basis”, concludes the head of robotics at Seat.
