This is the Nothing Phone (1), the heir to Carl Pei’s OnePlus

We have spent months with rumors and leaks, luckily for everyone, the wait is over: Nothing has just presented its first phone in London, the Phone (1) and it may not be what they sold us at first, despite everything .

If we had to name an expected phone for this year 2022, they would come to mind: the iPhone 14, the Galaxy S23… and the Nothing Phone (1). Yes, the latter has been cast on its own merits in a list full of flagships. Why? By insistence and novelty.

Carl Pei, one of the founders of OnePlus, formerly of Oppo, set up Nothing to offer the market new, authentic products that would reawaken the passion for consumer technology… or so we have always been told from the company. And it must be said that we loved his headphones.

Now, a year after launching its first product, Nothing has presented its phone worldwide and, finally, we can talk about all its technical characteristics. But, as we always do, here we leave you the specifications table for the most technical:

The Snapdargon 778+ is the heart of the team

We start the tour of the Nothing Phone (1) talking about its most outstanding point: the processor. For this first smartphone, the people at Carl Pei have decided to mount Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G+ (6nm). This SoC is one of the best in the mid / premium range.

Despite this, his election has been quite a surprise, when the sector assumed that the smartphone would be a flagship, and not a mid-range model. Nobody is going to lack power with this SoC, but it has to compete with countless models that have been mounting it for months.

The main claim comes from the software: Nothing OS

Although we are talking about a purely Android device, Nothing takes great pride in its Nothing OS customization layer. No bloatware, no annoying apps, just Android with key options to fully customize a phone that should be your best tool.

The Nothing Ecosystem is totally openyou can interact with third-party devices from Quick Settings, quickly as if you were using Nothing’s devices.

They ensure that it is compatible with Tesla or Apple apps: you can open the doors, turn on the air conditioning and see the remaining km you have left, or you can also check the battery status of the AirPods. And all without separate apps.

Also, On the back of the phone, some LED lights have been incorporated that will allow us to personalize the phone. in such a way that we know who is calling us, who the message is from and what is happening on our phone just by seeing it shine. We will have to see how the idea is executed.

FullHD + screen, OLED and 120 Hz

The next step is, as you know, the screen. Here Nothing has been completely successful: an OLED panel that claims to be flexible (will have to see what this means) 6.55″ in sizeso we are talking about a really big smartphone.

As for its relationship, the standard of this segment with a 2,400 x 1,080 px that offers a density of 402 dpi. In addition, we have 10-bit color depth, HDR10 + and a brightness of 500 nits (with peaks of 1,200 nits). Undoubtedly good numbers to be an OLED panel.

If we seek to give gaming, which due to the processor is something very feasible, The computer supports a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and 240 Hz touch sampling. In the average of any smartphone designed to play. Oh, and it has haptic touch motors.

Sony and Samsung sensors for their two cameras

Nothbing explains that we leave behind the idea that more cameras, better quality. And that is true, although we do not know if that is the justification for mounting only two sensors, or it is due to a budget issue (probably both).

The Nothing Phone (1) has, as we have said, two 50 Mpx sensors. A 50 Mpx Sony IMX766 main sensor with an f/1.88 aperture.

And next to it is another sensor, this time a wide angle, 50 Mpx manufactured by Samsun (JN1) and that has an aperture of f / 2.2.

On the front we see a single camera: 16 Mpx resolution and the sensor is an iSony IMX471 that offers an f/2.45 aperture. By the way, this is located in the left corner of the front panel.

Contained battery and a basic fast charge

If we go to the part of autonomy, battery and charging times, the Nothing Phone (1) does not stand out. Neither for bad nor for good. As for the size of the battery, we are talking about 4,500 mAh, which will have played a great role in not making a phone too thick.

Yes, we are going to fast charge, nothing flashy: 33 W with PD 3.0 cable and compatible with Quick Charge 4.0 technology. This allows the phone to be charged to 50% in just half an hour with the power plugged in. By the way, it has support for reverse charging at 5W.

Dimensions, weight and manufacturing

It must be said that the phone is not one of the lightest, although its construction justifies it: aluminum and glass weigh more than plastic, as well as being more pleasant to the touch.

We are talking about a phone of 159.2 mm x 75.8 mm x 8.3 mm which results in 193.5 grams of weight. It is finite and contained, and as it does not reach 200 g we can say that it is not heavy. It is in a fairly acceptable balance.

In terms of manufacturing, Nothing boasts that it has used 100% recycled aluminum for the chassis of the terminal, and that 50% of all plastics are responsibly sourced. The packaging of the smartphone, by the way, is made of recycled fiber.

Prices and availability of the Nothing Phone 1

And we come to the important thing: how much is Nothing’s first big phone going to cost? Nothing very prohibitive, but making it clear that it is a terminal with first-rate qualities.
