The elimination of the level crossing of Avenida Beniardà in Benidorm is closer and closer. The Minister of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi Spain, has advanced this Monday in Benidorm that “shortly the drafting of the project” to suppress this crossing at the level of the TRAM d’Alacant through one of the main access roads will be finalized to the city, next to the station itself, and that later the bidding process for these works will begin, budgeted at more than 5 million euros and an execution period of 22 months.
“This project includes the conditioning of an underpass for vehicles that will put an end to the traffic problems that occur at this access point to Benidorm,” explained Arcadi Spain. A performance that, as this newspaper published, would put solution to this level crossing with barriers on Beniardá avenue, which registers problems, both due to the traffic collapses that occur every time the barriers for the passage of the train are lowered and because of the insecurity it represents for pedestrians. After time of negotiations, the City Council and FGV (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana) have prepared the project with the burying of traffic in that area as well as the streetcarization of the line as it passes through the municipality.
In his speech, the minister also made reference to the current situation and pointed out that “Benidorm is one of the tourist capitals of the Mediterranean and that without a doubt it is also going through a difficult time, despite the aid that the Generalitat has articulated. Station expansion and new depot
In addition, the minister has verified how the works are progressing in execution of the expansion of the TRAM station and the construction of the new deposit for the rolling stock of Line 9 that are being executed next to the facilities and that are made after the transfer by the Benidorm City Council of 5,534 square meters and have a budget of 1.9 million euros, VAT included. The councilor thanked “the Benidorm City Council and its mayor for their collaboration at all times and that they are making the execution of this new infrastructure possible”.
This performance is included as part of the project to remodel the platforms and improve the accessibility of the stations and stops currently being executed by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) at different points on Line 9. This action, like the rest that are executed on Line 9, is likely to be co-financed by the European Union through the Operational Program of the European Regional Development Fund (Feder). With an area of 2,224.8 square meters, the new depot will house the covered train parking and the performance of quick reviews of the units, without the need for the units to have to travel to Talleres Campello.
The new tank equipped with three tracks, one of them electrified, will be equipped with a pit, gangway, bogie cleaner, pneumatic and compressor installation and other facilities. These facilities scheduled to accommodate 2,500 series diesel units, which currently provide service on Line 9, and those of the 5,000 series, the dual electro-diesel, which will be incorporated into this same line once the modernization works that are being carried out are completed.
In addition, they will also be able to accommodate the 4,100 series TRAM trains that carry out the routes of Line 1 (Luceros-Benidorm) to park or be revised if deemed appropriate for operational reasons. An additional advantage is the possibility of carrying out minor maintenance in Benidorm of units that provide service on Line 9 in the event of an extraordinary condition to the service or roadblocks due to works, in addition to being able to have more space for train parking than the existing one prior to the start of the works. As it is a new construction, the adaptation of spaces for changing rooms, offices and a multipurpose or training room is planned.
Modification of the service for works
On the occasion of these works, TRAM d’Alacant Since mid-January, it has modified the service of lines 1 and 9 to make it compatible with the improvement works. On Line 1, trains departing from Luceros extend their journey to Benidorm Intermodal, a station where you can transfer to continue your journey to Dénia. On Line 9, the trains leave for Dénia from Benidorm Intermodal and on the reverse route they cut their journey to end at Benidorm Intermodal.
