The orange alert for heat extends at least until Tuesday in the region
Suffocating and long-lasting heat. Extremadura is under the effects of an extensive and powerful Atlantic anticyclone that will force the orange alert for high temperatures to be maintained at least until Tuesday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has kept this warning active throughout the region since yesterday, although areas such as Las Vegas del Guadiana have been in this situation since Friday.
In this way, the region will chain four days in a row under the orange warning for heat. High temperatures are expected this Sunday that will exceed maximums of 40 degrees in many areas. The minimums will also be high, giving rise to tropical nights, since values above 20 degrees will be recorded. In Badajoz the thermometers will oscillate between 22 and 43 degrees; in Cáceres between 24 and 41; in Mérida between 21 and 42; in Plasencia between 24 and 41; and in Don Benito between 22 and 42 degrees.
High temperatures are not only felt in the heat of the air, they are also felt on the earth’s surface. This episode causes the ground to rise in temperature, as is clear from the information offered by Copernicus, the Earth Observation Program of the European Union, which observes the planet and its environment. According to the data of this program, this Saturday, July 9, the land surface exceeded 60 degrees in a large part of the Extremaduran community, as can be seen on the map.

Starting Monday, it is expected that a DANA, which will be located to the west of the peninsula, will displace a mass of very warm air of African origin. Due to this circumstance, they detail from the Aemet, the heat will intensify throughout the peninsula. This situation will remain, in principle, until next Wednesday. From the Aemet they warn that throughout this episode, the highest values will be reached in the southwest of the peninsula, especially in areas such as Extremadura.
Increase from Monday
Thus, for the beginning of the week it is expected that mercury will continue to rise in the region. The forecast for Monday points to generalized temperatures in Extremadura above 40 degrees, and could reach 42 in Las Vegas del Guadiana. The minimum will also be high, reaching 24 degrees in Plasencia and 23 degrees in Don Benito and Cáceres.
For the day on Tuesday, the values will continue to rise slightly. The maximum will again exceed 40 degrees in large areas and the minimum will continue to be above 20 degrees. The Aemet does not rule out that in Las Vegas del Guadiana and the Tagus Valley 44 degrees are reached, being the hottest nights at these points, with minimums above 25 degrees. Calima could also be registered.
On Wednesday, the situation could even get worse. For that day, although the warnings have not yet been activated, the minimum temperatures will suffer a slight rise in Cáceres and few changes in Badajoz. Instead, highs will once again exceed 40 degrees in most of the community. In Badajoz they point to maximums of 46 degrees; in Merida, 45; in Don Benito and Plasencia of 44; and in Cáceres 43. The minimum will remain at a general level above 20 degrees, although in Las Vegas del Guadiana and the Tajo valley they could again be above 25 degrees.

fire risk
The General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of the Interior, in accordance with the predictions of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), have launched an alert due to the heat wave and the risk of forest fires in large areas of the country, among that the Extremaduran community is located.

High temperatures favor the risk of forest fires and these organizations ask to notify 112 “immediately” if the fire is discovered at its beginning. In fact, the risk of forest fires intensifies and spreads to more areas as of Monday (image on the right). That day, large areas of the region will remain at extreme risk of fires, the maximum degree of danger. The Agency provides forest fire risk levels based on meteorological data and numerical weather prediction models.
To prevent these fires, he recommends paying attention to the regulations of each autonomous community; do not throw cigarettes, garbage and glass; do not light fires or bonfires in the mountains and nearby land; camping only in authorized areas; do not enter the forest or mount if there is a fire; and attend to the indications of the competent authorities in case of emergency.
Faced with high temperatures, it is advisable to limit exposure to the sun; keep the place well ventilated; eat light and regular meals, rich in water and mineral salts; frequently drink fluids; wear light colors, covering the largest possible surface of the foot and head; avoid prolonged physical exercises in the middle of the day; take an interest in the elderly and sick; and bear in mind that high temperatures favor the risk of forest fires.
