Timo Werner silences doubters with 35-yard effort just minutes into second RB Leipzig debut following £25million Chelsea exit

Timo Werner appears to have put his frustrating time at Chelsea firmly behind him with a goal just 36 minutes into his RB Leipzig debut.

The German forward completed a move to the German giants earlier this week in a deal worth around £25million as he penned a four-year deal with the club.

Werner is Leipzig’s all-time record scorer after ending his first spell at the club with 95 goals to his name when he moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2020, a far superior tally to the 23 that he managed in two years at Stamford Bridge.

Now that he’s back in the Bundesliga, he’s picked up exactly as he left off.

RB Leipzig were hosting Koln in their second match of the league season when the 26-year-old popped up with a goal to put them 1-0 up.

Picking up the ball around 35 yards from goal, Werner felt a side-footed effort towards goal that Marvin Schwabe made a real mess of as his bobbled into the back of his net.

Werner could hardly believe his luck as he wheeled away in modest celebration, to be joined by his teammates.

The forward was delighted to complete his move back Leipzig, but sent a message of thanks to the Chelsea fans for the ‘love and support’ that he was shown in west London.

Taking to social media, he said: “Today marks the end of my journey with @chelseafc. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club.

“At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches and staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

“I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and challenging times! We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me.

” I’m already looking forward to hopefully playing at Stamford Bridge again one day! See you soon, Timo.”
