That will be in his mantle forever
Jets rookie Brandin Echols took home the memory of his life in Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.
In the last minute of the first half, Echols intercepted a pass from Tom Brady after miscommunication with receiver Mike Evans. The interception and subsequent 30-yard return allowed New York to kick a field goal in the final second and extend its lead at halftime to 17-10.
After the game (in which the Bucs won Brady’s 33-yard touchdown hit Cyril Grayson with 15 seconds left), Echols chased after Brady in the handshake scrum. He handed the legend a marker and the interception ball and asked Brady to sign it for him.
That’s the kind of priceless memorabilia Echols will show his grandchildren decades from now, and it looks like it really will be a one-of-a-kind item. Brady said in his Let’s go! podcast that does not plan to sign any more interceptions.
“What a good boy. Young player, ”Brady said of the 24-year-old Echols, who was born two days before No. 5 Michigan beat No. 15 Iowa in 1997, with sophomore Tom Brady backing Brian Griese. “It was kind of flattering. It is not often that he signs an interception ball. I think it’s the first time.
“I don’t necessarily like to sign mistakes, let me say that. So that’s the last time I’m going to do that. I know it is the season of giving, I do not plan to give more gifts to people. It’s much better to receive than to give from my point of view as a quarterback. “
Brady may not want to autograph any mistakes going forward, but Jets head coach Robert Saleh thought it was a good gesture for him to hook Echols on a memorable memory.
“It’s a bit cheeky of the rookie to do it, right?” Saleh said Monday. But I think it says a lot about Tom Brady and his character. Main competitor: to sign the ball, I think it tells him a lot. I don’t care what they say, she chose Tom, it’s a childhood dream. That’s one of the best of all time and for Tom to please him with the autograph and do it for him, I think it was very good of him. “
