Tom Brady almost needed scuba lessons
Last month’s post-Super Bowl boat parade in Tampa could end up as memorable as Tom Brady’s seventh Super Bowl victory. The daring boat-to-boat launch of the Lombardi Trophy and Brady’s tottering return to dry land are unforgettable images. Well, for most of us.
On Tuesday night, Brady joined James Corden in The Late Late Show and was asked to recall the events of that day. Compared to the actual game, “I don’t remember that that well,” Brady joked.
Brady held his hands in front of his face as video of the trophy throw was played, dropping them to reveal a big smile after Cameron Brate caught. Corden asked Brady if any part of him was thinking, “What do I do if this goes overboard?”
The short answer is no.”
“First of all, I wasn’t thinking at the time. There wasn’t a thought, ”Brady said. “It was, ‘This seems like a lot of fun to do.’ Not to mention, when you’re holding one of those trophies, there are a lot of really sharp edges at the bottom, where the stand is. I found out later that if it had been an incomplete pass, I would have dropped like 80 feet. So I’m very happy with Cam. “
Anyone who saw Brady leave the ship would realize that he was in no condition to make the right decisions. Corden asked if his unstable appearance could be attributed to “sea legs or a touch of tequila.”
Brady said it was “a little bit of both”, but mostly he danced around the question.
“It was definitely a moment of celebration,” Brady said. “I am happy to be on the ground at that time, absolutely. Happy to be surrounded by my teammate QB Griff [Ryan Griffin], in the right place at the right time. Who can have a better friend than that? Just making sure I’m so comfortable getting off the boat like that. “
He had no idea that the man escorting Brady to shore was third-row quarterback Ryan Griffin until Brady mentioned it. The team’s polo shirt and Brady’s firm grip made Griffin look like a member of the Bucs’ security staff. Griffin has had a decent career as a backup quarterback, but he definitely has a future as an elite goalkeeper once his soccer days are over.
