Tottenham vs. Newcastle live score, updates, highlights & lineups from Premier League Sunday match

Tottenham and Newcastle both have work to do as they meet at White Hart Lane. The hosts will be looking for a win to kickstart what many consider to be a generous set of fixtures towards the end of the season.

Conte’s side finally broke their long alternative win-loss streak with back-to-back wins before the international break, following up a 2-0 win away to Brighton with a 3-1 victory at home to West Ham. Tottenham may have turned a corner just in time, sitting three points behind Arsenal in fourth, and a strong run of results could see them nick fourth spot from their North London rivals.

An eight match unbeaten streak, punctuated by six wins, saw Eddie Howe’s side charge clear of the relegation mix and had the Magpies looking at solidly mid-table finish, but recent results have taken the sheen off of Newcastle somewhat. Two away losses in quick succession are an ominous sign ahead of their trip to London, now sitting nine points above the drop.

Newcastle didn’t score in either loss, conceding late on in both. A 1-0 loss to Chelsea isn’t too shameful, but following that up with a 1-0 loss at relegation rivals Goodison Park won’t have pleased Eddie Howe. He’ll have to ensure his team are still focused on the task at hand if they want to remain clear of the relegation battle.

Goals (Assist):

TOT — Davies (Son) — 43rd min.

NEW — Schar — 39th min.

43rd min: GOAL!

Spurs equalise! Son drives into the area and ball is cleared for a corner. The Korean takes it. It’s cleared, and comes back to him, wide on the left. He takes a touch before lifting the ball into the area again. Davies gets a run on target as he attacks the goal, and gets a touch on the ball. All he needs is a small touch to send it past Dubravka, and that’s exactly what he manages. Spurs are level.

39th min: GOAL!

Willock wins a free kick from Son, outside the area, slightly to the left. Schar stands of the ball and powers it through the wall. Son moved away from his position, letting the ball through on goal. Lloris sees it coming, and looks like he should be able to keep it out, but there’s too much power on it and he’s not able to stop the shot. There’s a brief VAR check for handball as it flew through the wall, but no reprieve for the hosts.

36th min: Hojbjerg heads over from close, grappling with Manquillo as he does so. The move comes from a switch of play, left to right. This time Emerson Royal came inside, and Kulusevski is given space to cross. The game is a little more even now, with Newcastle showing a threat of their own going forward, with Willock regularly making advanced runs.

30th min: Newcastle press well and force Lloris to go long. Kane manages to hold it up and Spurs get going. The move ends with a Son shot from the edge of the area. There are bodies around him and the shot is too central in the end.

27th min: Harry Kane is booked for a late challenge on Saint-Maximin as the Frenchman once again drives with the ball down the left.

24th min: Romero pulls out a couple of strong blocks. Saint-Maximin is back in the action and the ball comes to him straight away. He breezes past Emerson Royal before  the Argentine defender stops him with a firm but fair challenge. It’s scrappy in the Spurs box as they don’t get it away and Willock looks to have wriggled through on goal briefly, but Romero is across to block the midfielder’s shot.

21st min: Allan Saint-Maximin is down for a while after taking a knock to the head in a clash with Bentancur. There was nothing malicious in it and the Newcastle man is back on his feet, after a couple of minutes.

15th min: It’s very much one way traffic, with Spurs seeing the lion’s share of possession so far. They’re causing the Newcastle full backs all kind of problems, as they don’t know whether to stick with Kulusevski and Son, or to step out to the wing backs. The Newcastle wide men are being forced to track back, and that’s allowing the wide centre back for the home team to stay high up the pitch, suffocating the visitors and ensuring there’s no way out. Another period of Spurs pressure sees a Kane shot hooked wide of the post inside a crowded penalty area.

10th min: Emerson Royal, whose runs Spurs have looked for a few times already, is playing on the right here, with Doherty shifted out to the left.

7th min: Since the first couple of minutes, Spurs have pinned the visitors back. Bentancur has time on his left, edge of the area, it deflects high for a corner. It’s retaken after Manquillo gave Ben Davies’ abdomen an enthusiastic hug, which the Spurs man didn’t feel like reciprocating.

3rd min: Newcastle go for an attacking start, and it’s a minute and a half before Spurs get hold of the ball. Allan Saint-Maximin involved already, having won a free kick on the left that came to nothing.

11:25 a.m.: Five minutes till kick off here, and the stadium is filling up. Both teams need a win here, and their fans know it.

11:18 a.m.: Eddie Howe says before the game that he’s looking for a reaction from his side after their last two games were consecutive 1-0 losses.

11:08 a.m.: The sun has gone behind the clouds briefly in North London, and the temperature has dropped. It could feel chilly by the time kick off comes around.

10:31 a.m.: Jonjo Shelvey makes the starting lineup for the visitors. Bruno Guimaraes only makes the bench.

10:30 a.m.: The Tottenham team is out. It’s more or less as expected, but Emerson Royal and Doherty both start, with no Reguilon.

10:25 a.m.: Team news from North London should be out shortly. Eddie Howe has a host of players looking to return to the squad in time, making his team hard to predict.

9:30 a.m.: White Hart Lane looks calm now, but both teams will be out on the pitch, battling for three points soon enough.

Tottenham vs. Newcastle lineups

Ben Davies was a doubt after feeling tightness during the international break, but is considered well enough to start the game. There’s no Reguilon and Sessegnon is also unavailable, so Spurs line up with Doherty and Emerson Royal as the wing backs.

Tottenham starting lineup (3-4-3, left to right): Lloris (GK) — Davies, Dier, Romero — Doherty, Hojbjerg, Benancur, Royal — Son, Kane, Kulusevski

Tottenham subs (9): Gollini (GK), Rodon, Sanchez, Winks, Bowden, White, Bergwijn, Lucas, Scarlett

Jonjo Shelvey and Fabian Schar return to the Newcastle squad, but there’s no place in the starting XI for Bruno Guimaraes after a tiring international break. Dubravka  starts between the sticks while Manquillo and Fraser start ahead of Krafth and Murphy.

Newcastle starting lineup (4-3-3, left to right): Dubravka (GK) — Targett, Burn, Schar, Manquillo — Joelinton, Shelvey, Willock — Fraser, Wood, Saint-Maximin
