Tottenham vs. Roma result: Spurs end preseason with 1-0 loss to Jose Mourinho’s Roma

Tottenham’s 2022/23 preseason campaign has ended in defeat as they lost 1-0 against former boss Jose Mourinho’s Roma in Israel.

A loss in Haifa is Spurs’ first negative result this summer as Antonio Conte’s side prepare for their Premier League curtain raiser against Southampton on August 6.

Roger Ibanez’s powerful first half header secured a win for Mourinho as Tottenham struggled for fluency throughout the game.

Conte’s summer signings all featured on the night but Harry Kane’s late miss ensured a disappointing end for Spurs at the Sammy Ofer Stadium.

Selection headaches for Conte ahead of Southampton clash

Conte has spent £91m ($108m) on transfers this summer but there is still a lack of certainty over his best starting XI and how to fit his new faces into the team.

The former Inter Milan coach consistently opted for a 3-4-3 system at the back end of last season and he wants to bring that plan into 2022/23.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski have formed a potent combination in 2022, and they all started against Rangers and Roma, as an indication over Conte’s preferred attacking unit.

However, that raises doubts about how Richarlison and Ivan Perisic will force their way into wing back roles ahead of Emerson, Matt Doherty, Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies.

Jose has the last laugh over Tottenham

Mourinho was the story at the start and finish of the game as the veteran Portuguese boss offered a reminder to Spurs fans of his streetwise nous.

His departure from North London drew a pragmatic response from the former Chelsea manager but he is the master of revenge when he feels wronged.

Despite the lack of competitiveness in this fixture, Mourinho ensured his side played with an edge and looked to battle with Conte’s Spurs, with the final stages akin to holding a lead in a cup game.

It has taken 89 minutes to carve out their best chance but Spurs should have an equalizer at the death!!

Sessegnon checks back inside and delivers a wicked cross but Kane somehow heads over the top!! A HUGE miss from the england skipper!!

86 Mins: That might have been……..THE chance!

Great skill by Richarlison to work an angle inside the box, but goal scorer Ibanez gets across to make a key block, and Roma clear.

82 Mins: Another scrap as Romero and Pellegrini both pick up a yellow card…….Jose will be OK with this!!

75 Mins: The clash has become scrappy in the last few minutes as Kane and Ibanez clash inside the box. The decision goes Roma’s way and Mourinho can see the finish line against his old side of him.

72 Mins: A HUGE chance for Roma to win it!

Abraham feeds a fine ball into Nicolo Zainolo but Cristian Romero races across to smother the chance away.

A Spurs fan has ran onto the pitch to try and snap a selfie with Kane as Conte throws on Sessegnon to replace Perisisc for the final stages.

64 Mins: More changes from Conte as Lucas Moura, Richarlison, Frasrer Forster and Emerson come on and Son, Kulusevski, Lloris and Doherty head off.

59 Mins: A quick break in play as Abraham and Nicola Zalewski both need treatment for injuries with latter forced off. Leonardo Spinazzola heads on and Nemanja Matic replaces Dybala.

55 Mins: Doherty’s lofted ball is gathered in by Perisic, but his shot flies over, as Tottenham carve out their first opportunity of the second period.

50 Mins: A slow start to the second period with Spurs looking to avoid their first preseason defeat this summer.

46 Mins: We are back in Haifa!!

Two changes at the break for Antonio Conte with Davinson Sanchez and Bissouma off and Clement Lenglet and Bentancur on.

Mourinho deservedly has the advantage over his former side at the break here in Israel. Dybala was unlucky not to put Roma in front early on, and despite some sporadic Spurs threat, Ibanez’s bullet header is the difference between the sides at half time.

41 Mins: Harry Kane has the ball in the net for Tottenham just before the break but his effort is ruled out for a narrow offside against Dejan Kulusevski.

34 Mins: Tottenham have reacted positively to falling behind as Perisic cuts inside and flashes one just wide of Patricio’s post.

28 Mins: AS ROME LEAD 1-0!!!!

Spurs’ flurry of positivity does not last as Mourinho’s Roma take the lead in straightforward fashion. Pellegrini’s whipped corner is powered home by Roger Ibanez as the Tottenham defense stood still.

23 Mins: Much better from Tottenham as Doherty heads a long ball through, which Rui Patricio gathers in, before Perisic neatly cuts back for Son Heung-min to fire over.

19 Mins: The pace of the game has slowed a little as Tottenham look to force their way into the contest.

15 minutes: Finally some signs of life from Spurs as the Roma tempo drops slightly. Pierre Hojbjerg lofts a clever cross into the box but neither Harry Kane or Doherty can make a clean connection and the Serie A side clear their lines.

11 Mins: AS Roma are carrying all of the early threat here in Haifa as Lorenzo Pellegrini whizzes a free kick over Lloris’ crossbar. The Italian then delivers a deep corner into the box but Chris Smalling nods well wide of the post.

Almost a dream start for Dybala as he whips a brilliant effort back across goal but Hugo Lloris makes a crucial save and blocks Tammy Abraham on the follow up.
