Tottenham vs Southampton LIVE: Premier League team news, line-ups and more tonight

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to make the most of Manchester United’s Tuesday night slip-up, when they host Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday. The Red Devils drew with Burnley to leave them dropping down to fifth in the race for a Champions League spot – three points above Spurs, but now having played three games more. West Ham moved up into the much-sought-after fourth spot and are four ahead of Conte’s men, but there’s a massive difference of four fixtures played between the Hammers and Spurs.

Victory here will propel Harry Kane and the team into the midst of what is an increasingly tight fight right now – but might not be for much longer, if the north London club can hold their nerve and pick up points from their games in hand. Were they to win all four, for example, they’d be a point ahead of Chelsea in third.

But Southampton have their own objectives to achieve. Just one defeat in eight in all competitions is a recent improvement and they’re up to 12th in the table, with the top half now in sight. Saints are one of the league’s draw specialists though, and goalscoring remains something of an issue. Follow all the action from Tottenham vs Southampton below:

Tottenham v Southampton

Tottenham defender Ben Davies spoke about the workload under manager Antonio Conte and how the club is eager to grow its own ambitions. He told BBC radio 5live:

The amount of work we’re doing is significant – but it’s enjoyable stuff. You feel like you’re doing it with a purpose.

“The top four is the minimum target we set ourselves and we’ve got some winnable games in hand.

“We’ve got to target wins in our two home games. If we do, we put ourselves in a great position for the final bit of the year.”

Tottenham vs Southampton: Hasenhuttl on Saints’ poor record versus Spurs

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl spoke about his teams bad record against Spurs recently and outlined where they have been going wrong in this fixture saying:

There was a reason why we’ve lost these games [against Spurs] in the past.

“We gave it away too easily. It seems that this season this has changed, our defending quality is a little bit better. But we still concede goals so we have to target a clean sheet. “In the end, a little bit of luck you need also against the big teams. Good game management. And a flexible tactic is also necessary, I think. “We are looking like having a chance in every game. We have shown this. We are comfortable with the way we are playing and we know how good we have to be. “The managing of the risk gives the reward and I think this is what we have to be clear on in this game.”

Tottenham v Southampton

Tottenham earned 21 points in their first nine league games under Antonio Conte but lost at Chelsea in their 10th, and most recent, top-flight fixture under him.

And, all six of their Premier League defeats this season have come in London.

Tottenham vs Southampton: Antonio Conte’s pre-match thoughts

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte stressed the importance of consistency for his team in picking up good results and making the Tottenham Hotspur stadium a fortress. He said:

It is important that we have continuity in our results. We play Southampton and then Wolverhampton on Sunday and when we play at home, our stadium has become our fortress. Also, our fans are ready to make a lot of noise and back us from the start until the end, and we have to exploit this situation.

“We are talking about a really good team. We played them a month ago (28 December), we drew (1-1) after a tough game. For sure, we have to pay great attention and we have to put on the pitch the same desire, the same will to get three points. We are in a good moment, and we want to play a good game and try to get three points.”

Ralph Hasenhuttl happy with Southampton’s squad strength after quiet window

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl admits it feels strange to find his squad fully intact after the January transfer window, but knows everyone will be needed for the challenges ahead.

Unlike the summer where Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard left before the deadline, the Saints did not see their ranks depleted.

According to reports, the club’s new owners fended off interest from Newcastle in defender Mohammed Salisu for a deal which could have been worth around £40million.
