Tudanca builds bridges with Emptied Spain to isolate the PP with Vox

The electoral cycle opens on February 13, in Castilla y León, with a new actor. Spain Emptied. It appears in five of the nine provinces and can be a key hinge to compose majorities. Stealing votes left and right. But the strategy followed by PP and PSOE is divergent. The popular ones fiercely fight the platforms of depopulation, they call them “white label” of the socialists. These, on the other hand, build bridges with them in case they open the door of “change” in a community governed for 35 years by conservatives.

Why that one, the “change” will be the ‘claim’ of the PSOE campaign in Castilla y León and its candidate, Luis Tudanca, regional secretary since 2014. It has already been in these weeks prior to the final stretch —’Change and hope’ was the slogan— and it will be in the final stretch. For the Socialists, despite the rain of polls that place the regional president, the popular Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, close to the absolute majority, “nothing is written“, and they want to assert both their victory in 2019 (which all the polls did not recommend either, they remember), and their party status “strong, cohesive” and as a hegemonic force of the left, unlike what happens in a very disintegrated right.

Because the leadership of the Castilian-Leon PSOE has designed with Ferraz a campaign more focused on the region. And, to prevent the “error” of what happened in the May 4 elections in Madrid from being repeated, he will expose Pedro Sánchez justly: he will only go four times (to Zamora, Leon, Soria and Valladolid), to avoid national contamination and Mañueco’s melee with the chief executive. In the previous elections, Sánchez directly confronted Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and she took the opportunity to victimize herself, fight him and ignore the socialist candidate, Ángel Gabilondo.

Tudanca attended an informative breakfast in Madrid on Wednesday, presented by the first vice president, Nadia Calviño, and supported by four other ministers and the federal leadership of his party. There he greeted the candidacies of the Emptied Spain: they can be “an ally“of the socialists” if they are committed to change, to changing things in Castilla y León”. The candidate explained that he understands the movement, “especially” in his community, in which the more than three decades of popular governments have made a dent Spain Empty “in general it has been useful and has made visible a claim that talks about imbalances” on issues such as “development, infrastructure or employment”. “All those who want to contribute, join the change in Castilla y León, are Welcome. I trust that we will be able to understand each other for that government of change to arrive,” he said.

“We’ve already experienced it”

However, Tudanca launched the notice: the “change flag in the region it is only represented by the PSOE.” “It is that we have already experienced it,” he added. He thus recalled how in 2019 the PSOE, for the first time since 1983, won the elections (35 prosecutors, for the 29 of the PP), and Ciudadanos, who had campaigned for “change” and “regeneration”, ended up supporting Mañueco and kept the conservatives in power. “The only way to guarantee it is for the PSOE to have a majority, not like in 2019, but greater why always there are temptations to perpetuate what we have“, and Empty Spain, he warned, is a “very heterogeneous movement.” He illustrated it with a fact: 14 of the 18 candidates on the list for Valladolid are former orange formation.

Socialists stress that they are out to win, and that fragmentation it can help. If the PP and Vox do not add up by themselves, they allege, the scenario “opens up”. And Spain Emptied can be key. The PSOE believes that there is a lot of fashion effect, and does not perceive that it has entry into the five provinces in which it attends: Soria, Burgos, Palencia, Salamanca and Valladolid. Yes, more so in the first, Soria, where the movement “is more consolidated.” But even if they do not get a seat, it can alter the rest, the distribution of the last seats in each district, and that is why they believe in the Tudanca circle that the ballot boxes are unpredictable.

Furthermore, Empty Spain is not alone: there are also By Avila (split from the PP, with which Mañueco could not agree on the budgets for 2022), Union of the Leonese People (Leonese training, but conservative) and Cs. Sources very close to the candidate emphasize that for a local platform “it is difficult to justify” an alliance with the PP, the party that “has put them in the hole.” “Mañueco insults Emptied Spain [se presenta como el partido del campo] and for Ávila and treats UPL as if it were ERC”, they argue. The regional president “trusts everything to Vox for that”, but an agreement with the extreme right would prevent him from adding other small formations, according to the calculation of the PSOE.
