Two men, 45 and 78 years old, have died from gunshot wounds and another, 20, has been injured in the Valencian cemetery of Torrent after a shooting that occurred around ten in the morning on Monday. The first versions suggested that it was a brawl between families that ended with gunshots. The deceased old man visited the cemetery to bring flowers to his wife, and was accidentally shot, according to police sources. At first the heart attack was considered as the cause of death but when the body was raised a bullet hole was found in the side, so we will have to wait for the results of the autopsy.

The 20-year-old, the son of one of the deceased, was wounded by a bullet in the leg, with an entry and exit hole, but his life is not in danger, according to health sources. The scientific police and the judicial commission were working inside the compound collecting evidence, signs and vestiges.

The confrontation took place shortly after ten in the morning, when the cemetery was full of people who came to visit their loved ones on the occasion of All Saints’ Day. The police are considering as a hypothesis of the attack that this occurred in retaliation for old disputes between two family clans based in Torrent, a city of 81,000 inhabitants located 13 kilometers from Valencia. At the moment, it is unknown who is the author or authors of the shooting, according to police sources cited by Efe.

In-person sources detail that when the shots were heard, people stampeded out of the cemetery. Most of the workers did not notice the events, because they were in the office located next to the entrance door and the shots were fired far from that access.

Two hours after the event, cemetery workers and police tried to calm a relative of the oldest deceased, who was crying at the entrance to the cemetery. Just a few meters from her, the 45-year-old sister of the shot also showed her grief with a heartbreaking cry. A relative tried to console her and nervously assured that he knew who the author of the shots was, but that he was not going to say it, that it would be known.

Sources close to the investigation point out that the person who shot entered the cemetery with the marked objective of looking for the 45-year-old victim. The same sources added that already last year they warned of the possibility of a shooting on All Saints’ Day, but in the end it was a false alarm. The warning was due to the fear of an alleged revenge between family clans for what happened in 2016, also in Torrent. A father and son were then shot in the Xenillet neighborhood after an argument that began over a trivial matter.

Surveillance in a neighborhood

This Monday afternoon, after the shooting, several cars of agents of the National Police and the Local Police traveled the streets of the neighborhood, inhabited by families of very humble extraction, which presented a calm aspect, with hardly any movement of people. Police sources do not believe that there will be immediate reprisals because the procedure in other cases is to disappear for a while.

Many citizens went to the Torrent cemetery on Monday, which houses some 10,000 graves, to visit their dead, but they found a police cordon that prevented the passage. Others were drawn by curiosity after news of the shooting spread through the city. The Valencian town council ordered the facilities to be closed.
