Vocational Training does not stop growing in the province. Two out of every three students who finish Secondary choose this path compared to those in Baccalaureate, aimed at university studies. The adaptation of the training cycles to the business reality and the productive fabric of Alicante, the concrete and direct job opportunities and the fact that in two years the student can have the degree compared to the four of the University have promoted these studies. The latter, in times of crisis, counts even more.
You just have to see the numbers. In the last five years the FP has increased its enrollment by 22% and requests have been doubled for this course compared to the previous one. In 2020-2021, a total of 35,251 students are enrolled compared to 22,221 who are studying for the Baccalaureate. The trend is upward and experts believe it will go higher.
The training cycles in mechanics, robotics and computing, which are in great demand by companies, contribute decisively to this “pull”.
In addition, with the pandemic, certain training families, such as the health one, will benefit from the opening of job banks by the Health Department because more nursing assistants and more health technicians will be needed. “This encourages many young people to opt for this way of training”, explains the director of the Integrated Center of FP Canastell, in San Vicente del Raspeig, Carlos Navas.
«The psychological barrier that existed has been broken and already in the previous crisis, families realized that before having a university degree guaranteed you a job and also quality and well-paid jobs, but not now. They see it more feasible to access the labor market from VET because it is more direct. Further, in two years they have the degree instead of taking at least four at the university plus a master’s degree. And they know that if they want to continue with higher education later, they can do so because there are itineraries, “says Navas.
The president of the association of directors of Secondary in the province, Toni González Picornell, thinks that the upward trend of VET will continue. «The key is that in the last five years the offer has been able to adapt to the reality of the economic sectors of the province. There is still a long way to go, but it is true that the Ministry of Education has given a boost to VET with the training offer, widely distributed throughout the province, and the plans that continue to be developed. For this reason, “young people who do not seek the strictly academic part, who prefer more practice, see more concrete options for the future at the work level.”
In fact, both González Picornell and Navas have been surprised that in full confinement and in these following months there were companies that called them to request interns. “In the automotive, robotics, electricity, computing, hospitality, mechanics and administrative profiles there is demand from companies and a part of the students who carry out the internships later stay with a labor contract”, explains the director of the Integrated Professional Training Center of San Vicente del Raspeig.
It’s more, «For two or three years we have been detecting students who carry out the University-FP itinerary because in companies they ask for a specific module of a technical branch or because they see the job prospect more directly, “says González-Picornell.
The Ministry of Education already has a plan to modernize Vocational Training in conjunction with the Ministry of Education. This plan aims to promote digitization and innovation to respond to the great demand that is already occurring and that is expected for the coming years in companies. In the province, there is a special interest in the commitment to digital transformation by the Consell, the Provincial Council and the Alicante City Council and the fact that the Digital District functions as a pole of attraction for companies. In fact, among the specialization courses, known as the FP masters, one of those that has been implemented this year is Cybersecurity in Information Technology Environments, which is taught at IES Severo Ochoa in Elche.
Only one week ago the students who enrolled in the 1,479 extraordinary places that Education took out for 125 new training cycles in 36 educational centers in 23 municipalities began the course.
