Unemployment rises by 2,000 people in the province despite the historic fall in the rest of Spain

August has always been a month that in the province of Alicante has been characterized by the destruction of employment, and this time it has not been less, since the Labora offices have registered 2,069 new registrants, which leaves the total figure of unemployed at 173,873. So far everything may seem normal. What is striking is that This increase occurred at the same time that, in Spain as a whole, the number of unemployed has fallen at 82,583 people, an unprecedented figure in the historical series that leaves the total number of unemployed at 3,333,915.

Registered unemployment in August 2021

Only agriculture in Alicante has escaped the general dynamics, by computing 61 fewer unemployed persons, which put the total figure at 7,105. The sector that has led the increase in unemployment is the industry, with 936 registered more than a total of 22,662, followed by construction, with 779 that leave the global calculation at 16,073. The service sector, curiously, has performed quite positivelyTaking into account that it is at the end of August when many temporary contracts related to tourism, in the case of hospitality, end. However, this time the increase was only 333 people, which put the total figure at 113,981. Finally, the group of people without a previous job adds 82 new unemployed, leaving a balance of 14,052.

Affiliation to Social Security, on the other hand, has fallen by 5,761 people, so that the total number of contributors stands at 674,192. Is about a fall that breaks a trend of continued increases that had been maintained in the last five months, although the current number of contributors is better than that registered in the prepandemic, since in August 2019 there were a total of 667,905 affiliates.

In the case of unemployment, a positive streak of five months has also been broken, with the added problem that in this section the distance with the figures prior to the health crisis is still more than considerable. The 173,873 current unemployed are a number well above the 144,275 in 2019.

And what is the reason for this contrast between the provincial and national figures? The unions seem to have it clear. The general secretary of the UGT in l’Alacantí-Les Marines, Yaissel Sánchez, points out that the province continues in the same historical line of increase in unemployment in August, “weighed down above all by the behavior of the industrial sector. This behavior we have been denouncing on several occasions when irregularities occur in some companies, sending workers to unemployment instead of vacation enjoyment “. For this reason, the union highlights the need to promote a change in the production model “that eradicates precariousness,” he stresses.

Similarly, José María Ruiz, Secretary of Employment of CC OO in the same demarcation, points out that the increase in unemployment, similar to that registered in 2020, “does not suggest that it is occurring in the province the recovery that does occur elsewhere».

The director of Economy of the CEV employer, Ricardo Miralles, points out, for his part, that the figures, which are negative in the whole of the Valencian Community, “warn that the self-employed and companies have not yet overcome the impact of the crisis” Therefore, he considers that “this is not the time to force a rise in the SMI.”

Finally, the regional Secretary for Employment, Enric Nomdedéu, attributes the increase in unemployment to the usual seasonal movement in the summer season, “where industry and construction terminate temporary contracts.”

ERTE continues to decline with 1,947 fewer workers

Although it is true that the data regarding unemployment and Social Security affiliation have not been anything positive in the month of August, the same has not happened in the case of the Temporary Employment Regulation Files (ERTE), which continue downward. During the month of August, according to the data provided by the Ministry of Social Security, there were 1,947 employees in the province who were no longer affected and who were able to return, consequently, to their respective jobs. In this way, only 8,980 people remain in this situation of the almost 133,000 that came to be in the worst moments of confinement.
