University of Northern Iowa wrestling meets to beat Oklahoma State

The Northern Iowa wrestling team entered the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena and stunned the fourth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday night.

The Panthers rallied from a 12-0 deficit to defeat Oklahoma State, 19-15. After losing the first four games, Northern Iowa won five of the last six to secure just the fourth victory over Oklahoma State in program history, but also the second in the past three years.

Northern Iowa, now 4-5 overall this season and 2-2 against the Big 12, had never beaten Oklahoma State in Stillwater since they began battling each other in 1962 … until Saturday night. The Panthers last beat Oklahoma State at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls in January 2020, by the same score of 19-15.

That matchup at McLeod two years ago was more of a back-and-forth than Saturday night’s victory. There was only one change in leadership, which came after the Panthers won four in a row from 157 to 184, a streak marked by consecutive bonus point wins by Lance Runyon and Parker Keckeisen.
