Updated 2022 NFL Draft Order: Jaguars and Lions losses mean top pick drops to Week 18

This week’s tank commanders: the New York Jets.

The Jets put together a surprising effort against the Buccaneers, leading the game 24-20 with two minutes left. A doomed fourth-down conversion led to a classic Tom Brady win at MetLife Stadium, and it wasn’t without drama.

The Jaguars found an opposite way to lose Sunday, by having Mac Jones and the Patriots absolutely blow their doors off to the tune of 50-10. The loss pushes Jacksonville to 2-14 and one game closer to a second consecutive No. 1 overall pick. It will come down to Week 18 with the Lions still in the running after their own loss to the Seahawks.

Unfortunately for the Jags, their last first overall pick hasn’t been great: Trevor Lawrence had another day to forget, throwing a touchdown to three interceptions in the loss to New England. While Lawrence generally gets a pass for this season, there are reasons for Jags fans heading into the offseason with a bit of reserve.

Jacksonville can only hope that his next pick – and the one before – turns out to be the products that move forward. The Jaguars draw the Colts home in Week 18, while the Lions host the Packers to determine who will pick first in the 2022 NFL Draft.

BIG BOARD: Ranking of the 100 best prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft

Defense is the name of the game in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Featured by the top two passing runners, Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon and Aiden Hutchinson of Michigan, this year’s class of defenders could prove to be building blocks for teams looking to increase their weight in D.

After the edge group, NFL squads might salivate with secondary options: LSU cornerback Derek Stingley is a former consensus All-American, including earning a nod from Sporting News in 2019, and it could be a of the top five teams in April. Scouts and analysts have named Stingley the best CB prospect in this year’s draft.

Joining Stingley in a strong secondary group is Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton, who could also be a good bet to be the first DB off the board. The Fighting Irish safety was named by consensus All-American last season, and for good reason: He scored three interceptions for one of the best defenders in the nation and was named a finalist for the Bednarik Award in 2021.

On the offensive side of the ball, teams looking for salvage quarterbacks will have options, though it remains to be seen whether or not there will be a bona fide number one quarterback emerging before the draft: North Carolina’s Sam Howell was last in. declare, join Kenny Pickett from Pittsburgh and Matt Corral from Ole Miss.

Cincinnati’s Desmon Ridder and Liberty’s Malik Willis are also expected to enter the 2022 NFL Draft.
