Hidden Germany: where to stay and what to do off the beaten track | Germany holidays

Although Germany is still taking the pandemic a little more seriously than much of Europe (masks are still required on public transport in many places, for example), the country is fully open to visitors after two years of on-and-off restrictions. Though often overlooked in favour of the savoir vivre of France or the dolce vita of Italy, this vast country has plenty of first-class holiday options, from island-hopping or beach-bumming along the Baltic coast, to hiking or cycling the Alps and visiting lakes, castles, national parks and buzzing cities. MoselThe German part of the Mosel River runs for 150 miles from Perl, on the border with France and Luxembourg, to Koblenz, passing steep, vine-covered hillsides, medieval villages, fairytale hilltop castles and the odd art nouveau villa. Zara Aleena just wanted to walk home. We will keep marching until women are safe on our streets | anna birley

Yo wish today's vigil didn't have to happen. The murdered woman's name, Zara Aleena, becomes another that we remember, joining the growing list of women who will never meet each other but who find themselves grouped together, with little in common but the fact that they never made it home.Since the murder of Sarah Everard, vigils have become symbols of resistance to male violence in the UK. A way not just to remember and mourn, but for women to mobilize. By standing shoulder to shoulder, we take up space, our physical presence defying a status quo that means these public spaces where we meet are not always safe spaces for women to be.Zara walked everywhere, and believed that all women should be able to walk home. to statement from her family talked about how she would bring a pair o...

Lewis Hamilton shows grace and purpose to rise above F1 racism rows | Lewis Hamilton

Were Lewis Hamilton's task on track not hard enough, Formula One has long presented an altogether more formidable struggle. Before this weekend's British Grand Prix he was served another stark reminder of the unpleasant reality that race remains a serious issue for the only black driver in the sport. Hamilton has faced it down with grace and stoicism. The depths of bigotry have served only to elevate further an ambassador of which the sport can be proud.F1 roundly condemned Nelson Piquet's use of a racist slur in speaking about Hamilton, which was made public this week, since exacerbated as further examples of his intolerance have emerged. Piquet has formed in this department, few were surprised by it or convinced by his apology of him in which he claimed his words of him had been mis...

‘It was sort of a feeling’: Trump film-maker says he feared trouble at Capitol | donald trump

When the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack deposed British film-maker Alex Holder, it heard from a first-hand fact witness who inadvertently observed some of the darkest and most politically fraught days of Donald Trump's time in office. The new witness, who emerged late in the congressional investigation into the Capitol attack, had extensive personal access to Donald Trump and his family as the administration imploded in the post-2020 election period after the former president lost to Joe Biden.Holder was there for it all: three sit-down interviews with Trump, including one at the White House, numerous other interviews with Trump's adult children, private conversations among top aides and advisers before the election, and around the Capitol itself as it ...

Binge drinking may create risks among moderate drinkers, study says

That one night out with friends may be more harmful to your health than having a drink every day of the week, new research suggests. A study published in June in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found moderate drinkers were more likely to engage in binge-drinking behaviors, leading to an increased risk of alcohol-related problems. Researchers surveyed 1,229 drinkers ages 30 and older in 2004 to 2005, and again from 2015 to 2016. The participants were separated between moderate and heavy drinkers, with moderate drinking defined as having an average of one drink per day over the course of a week.Study authors asked participants how many times they engaged in binge-drinking behavior, defined as consuming five drinks or more in a short period of time, in the past month. Although ...

Here, I use only plantains, and add lime leaves for a little twist. ...
