The United States men’s national soccer team is finally playing a game that matters. And anything but a victory would be a huge surprise.
The USMNT faces Honduras in a Concacaf Nations League semi-final with the winner advancing to Sunday’s title game and the loser playing for third place. It is the USA’s first match in official competition since November 2019.
Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic will be back in the lineup for the Americans, who will be lined up with a team in full force as they look to get back on track after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland in a set-up of display. The United States scheduled the Switzerland game so that players could train at altitude in the Swiss Alps before the Nations League games at Empower Field in Denver, Colorado.
The biggest lineup questions for head coach Gregg Berhalter will revolve around the starting center forward (Josh Sargent will likely get the nod again) and the players right behind the target forward. Will Brenden Aaronson or Gio Reyna give up their starting job for Pulisic?
What is the Concacaf Nations League?
Concacaf, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, launched the League of Nations tournament in 2019 to provide meaningful competition for all 41 countries in the region between the World Ranking and the biennial tournament of the Gold Cup.
The League of Nations divides the 41 countries into three tiers with countries promoted and relegated based on performance. The four top tier “League A” group winners advance to a Final Four. The United States, Honduras, Mexico and Costa Rica advanced to the inaugural semifinal round. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Final Four was delayed for a year until June 2021.

History says America should win this game. The USMNT has defeated Honduras in 12 of the 17 competitive matches of all time and has won the last seven played on US soil.
Although they had their problems (up front, in midfield and in possession), expect a better performance from the United States than the loss to Switzerland, No. 13 in the rankings. The Swiss are a strong team and the USMNT certainly had heavy legs from altitude training.
Hondurans, ranked 67th in the world, will seek to make life difficult for Americans. Expect the Central American side to establish a defensive wall and choose moments to hit the United States on the counterattack.
For that reason, the attractive value of the bet on the board is Under 2.5 total goals at +100. But if the US scores early, it would be sensible to bet the 3.5+ goals live. If Honduras is chasing the game at height, it will quickly fade in the second half and space will open up for the USMNT.
- Honduras to Win: +1000
- Tie: +340

- United States to win by 2: +295

Prediction: USA wins by 1 or 2 goals.
