The ex-Danielle storm is leaving “important” rainfall in the north of Extremadura

The passage over Extremadura of the storm ‘ex-Danielle’ is leaving rains from this Monday and the Aemet foresees that the succession of fronts will continue until Friday. The town in Extremadura that has received the most water so far is Valverde del Fresno. With 44.4 liters per square meter, the Serragatina town is also the fourth rainiest municipality in the country, according to data from the Aemet until 2:00 p.m. Tornavacas came next, with 39.4 litres. It is in fifth place in the national ranking and second in the regional ranking; followed by Nuñomoral (29); Monastery (26.8) and Navalvillar de Ibor (22.2).

The territorial delegate of the Aemet in Extremadura, Marcelino Núñez, points out that this Tuesday the rainfall is being important in the north of the province of Cáceres, with more than 40 liters per square meter. This Monday, the first day of the storm, the rains were “weak or moderate”, an important aspect so that the land is soaked first, runoff does not occur, and the land begins to store water.

Drought

The entire region is affected by the drought, but especially the Tentudía area, which is facing a critical situation. The lack of rainfall has left the reserves of the swamps in the region at a minimum. The areas of the region with the greatest negative anomalies of accumulated precipitation are found in the southwest of the province of Badajoz. Specifically, the Guadiana reservoirs are at 24.2 percent (with 2,295 dammed cubic hectometres), while those of the Tagus are at 37.1 percent of their capacity (with 4,101 accumulated cubic hectometres).

The hydrological year, about to come to an end on September 30, continues to be ‘very dry’, since from October 2021, when it started, until last August 358.6 liters per square meter have been registered in Extremadura, 66 percent of the reference values, which are 542.9 mm.

The entire autonomous community of Extremadura will be on yellow alert for rain this Tuesday, the 13th, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Precipitation accumulation of up to 15 mm per hour is expected with a probability of between 40 and 70 percent. In the north of the region, the precipitation accumulated in 12 hours could harvest 60 mm.

The end of the yellow alert is scheduled for midnight on Wednesday the 14th. Given the situation of the weather alert, the 112 of Extremadura recommends that citizens circulate on the roads with the maximum possible precaution, paying special attention to landslides that could occur, as well as not crossing flooded roads, not parking in dry riverbeds, or on the banks of rivers and always carrying a telephone to communicate any emergency situation.
