Washington tries unsuccessfully to get Venezuela to distance itself from Russia

A delegation of officials from the US State Department traveled to Caracas last weekend to search without apparent luck for a weakening of relations between Venezuela and Russia. In accordance with The New York Times, The delegation landed with the offer of a willingness from the United States to buy Venezuelan crude if the Miraflores Palace distances itself from Moscow in the midst of the open crisis with the invasion of Ukraine. According to the Reuters agency, the “round of talks” did not reach “no deal“. The sources cited by the agency did not refer to another possible meeting. Both countries have remained silent.

Republican Senator, blond frame, reacted negatively to the White House attempt. “(Joe) Biden is using the excuse of Russia to propose the agreement that he always wanted to make to (Nicolás) Maduro. Instead of producing more local oil, they want to replace the oil they bought from a murderous dictator (Vladimir Putin) by buying from another murderous dictator.”

The surprise visit took place a few days after Maduro reaffirmed his will to strengthen the “strategic alliance” with the Kremlin that began with the arrival of Hugo Chavez to the power. Last week, Maduro telephoned Putin to convey “Venezuela’s condemnation of NATO’s destabilizing actions.” With that communication, he reaffirmed his status as the Kremlin’s main ally in Latin America. On February 28, Venezuela joined Russia, China, Cuba and Eritrea in voting at a UN Human Rights Council session against an urgent meeting to discuss the implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In this context, Maduro promised in turn “to increase all preparation, training, and cooperation plans with a world military power such as Russia.”
