“I think that’s the tough guy’s fake.”
Pistons bench warmer Rodney McGruder became the most discussed player in the NBA on Saturday, but not because of anything he did during his team’s loss to Golden State.
McGruder got some garbage minutes at the end of the 118–91 loss, but it was what he did after the buzzer that caused Klay Thompson and Draymond Green to tear him apart. As teams filtered into the locker room, McGruder walked up to the Warriors bench and said something to Golden State rookie Juan Toscano-Anderson, who was not in uniform. Thompson, who was part of the game’s broadcast team, was not impressed.
When asked to explain what was going on on the ground, Thompson said: “I don’t know. This guy could be out of the league very soon. He’s probably crazy about it. Who knows? He’s here trying to start something like he’s a good player or something. Brother, get out of here. “
Green was also asked about the incident after the game and spent nearly two minutes gutting McGruder and Wayne Ellington. (According to Green, McGruder reached out to Toscano-Anderson to deliver a message about something the rookie had said to Ellington in the first half.) Draymond, puzzled, had some lines of choice, including: “When the hell did Rodney McGruder become the tough guy on the team? And” I know no one is afraid of Rodney McGruder. “
After Green and Thompson’s comments went viral, Ellington defended his teammate on Sunday.
“First of all, I think it’s very unprofessional and it’s definitely not elegant for someone to attack Rodney’s professional career the way it was attacked.” Ellington told reporters. “Rodney, I’ve known him since we played in Miami with the Heat. He’s one of the hardest working, humble, down-to-earth guys in this league. So that someone tries to attack him like that, I think it’s very unfair. “
While Green accused McGruder of acting harsh, Ellington called Green for the same.
“And then the guys call him, they know this tough guy who talks about all these things,” Ellington continued. “Rod has never tried to portray or act like a tough guy in this league. To be honest, the guy over there, Juan, is the one who started it all. Rod is a man of respect, just like me, and I felt like he took offense at whatever the kid said to me in the first half. I just laughed and moved on. But obviously he stayed with Rod and, like my brother, took it upon himself to go check the temperature of the situation, and that’s what men do. We talk face to face, face to face. So, you know. There has never been any kind of male rapprochement with Rod.
“So for Draymond to sit down and talk all that crazy stuff behind a mic, I think that’s the tough guy’s fake, to be honest with you. So, I’m only going to talk about this situation once and leave it behind. But I think it’s unfair for them to attack my man that way, and I appreciate Rod and love him like a brother for whatever he did and that I know was not hard. He probably just walked over there to try and clear things up with the guy. “
The video appears to support Ellington’s version of events. Look at the expression on McGruder’s face as he talks to Toscano-Anderson. He doesn’t seem angry. It seems he’s just asking Toscano-Anderson what happened.
The allegations made by Green and Ellington about tough guys are also spot on. It’s 2021. No one’s going to start punching for something a guy said to someone else on an NBA court. This is how you get fined, suspended, and lose your sponsorships. It’s not 1985. There’s nothing wrong with McGruder trying to defuse the situation instead of breaking down the Toscano-Anderson blockade.
