“We have to get more electric cars sold”

ABC MOTOR FORUM

Jorge Ordás, deputy director of Mobility of the DGT, the Councilor for Mobility of the Madrid City Council, Borja Carabante; the CEO of Europcar Mobility, Tobias Zisik; and the general director of AMA Seguros, José Luis Bahillo, analyze what the mobility of the future will be like on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the ABC Award for Best Car of the Year

«Madrid will have overcome the challenge of mobility as a service». This is the vision of the future you have for your city
Jorge Ordás, the deputy director of Mobility of the
DGT. “It’s something that nobody has achieved yet,” he continued, pointing out that at least five different applications are needed on the phone to cover the entire offer available. How urban transport will transform is something that will always be uncertain, and the complexity only increases exponentially as new players or technologies such as autonomous driving are added.

This was the thematic line of the first of the round tables that ABC will celebrate on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the delivery of its award for Best Car of the Year. In it, entitled ‘The Closest Mobility’, participated, in addition to Ordás, the Councilor for Mobility of the Madrid City Council,
Borja Carabante; the CEO of Europcar Mobility,
Tobias Sisik; and the CEO of AMA Seguros,
Jose Luis Baillowith the moderation of the debate by Patxi Fernández.

No discussion of mobility in Spain is exempt from talking about the average age of the park, which exceeds 12 years. According to Zisik, the European company is in 10 years and its sector, the rent a car, is one of the main responsible for the renewal of vehicles in the market. Although in a normal situation the company he directs has a fleet of 80,000 vehicles with an average age of eight months, the manager charged that the shortage of semiconductors has lengthened their contracts and made it difficult for them to supply models, but that this situation It will be regularized from next year.

“I don’t worry about the
cars over 50 years old», Carabante affirmed, winking at the Renault 5 that won the first ABC prize, in 1973. «It only means that they have taken care of them to last so long». The City Council wants to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the city and reduce the presence of models over 10 years old, since they are considerably more polluting and unsafe than the most modern ones and, according to the councilor, an effective mechanism to speed up the adoption of electric vehicles are low-emission zones. They are, along with
aid measuresan accelerator to reduce the average age”, he asserted, before recalling that, with the Climate Change Law, the 149 Spanish cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants will have to have their own restricted areas in 2023.

No label reforms

As a result of them, the environmental labels of the DGT came up for debate. “It is true that it is not a perfect system,” Ordás conceded, “but it should be remembered that it was one of the first to be implemented in Europe and has made it possible to modernize decision-making beyond odd or even number plates.” According to the deputy director of Traffic, who recalled that this legislature
badges will not change, the goal is to “reach the right balance”. In this sense, if the Zeros were strictly electric cars, very few Spaniards —less than 3% of the fleet— would have access to them and the measures to create recharging infrastructure, so requested by manufacturers, would not be so justified. “We have to try to get enough electric cars sold for factories to fill their shifts,” he said.

Entering micromobility, the CEO of
AMA InsuranceJosé Luis Bahillo, stressed that new insurance would have to be developed to cover the person who uses the services of electric scooters and scooters, since «100,000 euros may be enough to cover vehicles, but
are completely insufficient when it comes to accidents with people. In 2021, eight fatalities of micromobility users were recorded and, as of March 21, they will be ordered under the new Traffic and Road Safety Law.

Finally, Tobias Zisik pointed out that rental companies already
they had developed car sharing before there were six operators per minute in Madrid and pointed out the business opportunity of applying its solutions to the business sector, given that “80% of business trips are made with a personal vehicle”, adding that it should be treated of “a nightmare” to provide the right coverage for insurers.

To facilitate this, he pointed out that his company,
Europcar, had reached a strategic agreement with Telefónica to connect its entire fleet and try to find out why accidents occur. In this area, Ordás pointed out that
the European Commission “is receptive to sharing vehicle information, if it can save lives.”
