The Colombian coach Reinaldo Rueda, defended his work at the head of the coffee team in the face of criticism, for the streak of five games without winning and said that when he took office, his managers were seventh and today they are fourth.
“Despite the lack of goals and being able to secure better results at home, we went from seventh place to fourth place in South America, we went on to pay off a large goal-difference debt,” said the coach, who replaced Portuguese Carlos Queiroz last year, at the press conference prior to Friday’s game in Barranquilla with Peru.
Of the last five games played in the Qatar World Cup Qualifiers, Colombia equalized four of them 0-0 and lost 1-0 on their visit to Brazil, for which Rueda has been criticized, despite which his team is in fourth place with 17 units after 14 games.
“As long as the goal is not achieved, the criticism must be accepted. The validity will depend on the analysis of each game, the perspective with which it is evaluated, what each of the games we have faced where we have not scored a goal means, the number of options that are created, the offensive volume, the offensive proposal, the proactive game played by Colombia from the start of the match”, he pointed out.
He added: “If an objective analysis is made, these criticisms have no basis, for what is shown in the table. But for what the results are, they have all the validity.”
To try to overcome that deficiency in front of the arc, Rueda assured that “many factors have been analyzed in all orders, both in the movements of a soccer order and in the accompaniment”.
“The players have each worked on an individual ‘coaching’, in that reflection and feedback on the aspects to improve,” he said.
Rueda also referred to Peru, which enters the match in fifth place with 17 points as well but worse goal difference, and said that It is a team “with a work footprint of several years, also from a World Cup (Russia 2018) in which they participated and which has important values”.
In that sense, he pointed out that although the full-backs Luis Advíncula and Miguel Trauco, who are usually the starters, will not be there, men like Aldo Corzo or Marcos López “who have been playing” with the “Blanquirroja” in recent days.
That is why he considers that “you have to play an intelligent game, undoubtedly you cannot say or be biased that this (the absence of the starting full-backs) is the weak point.”
“I think it is a match that must be worked on with all possible variants on our part in the offensive part and naturally I am aware that we are facing a rival that has very good variants and a system that can also vary it”, he valued.
