  • The European Council on June 23 and 24 must approve the candidate status of the Slavic country

The European Commission has recommended that the 27 Heads of State and Government of the EU grant to Ukraine -as well as moldova– the status of a candidate country. President, Volodymyr Zelensky, claimed membership on February 28, four days after the start of the Russian invasion. Unanimity of the Twenty-seven

On June 22 and 24, the Heads of State and Government of the 27 member states of the European Union must approve by unanimity Ukraine’s status as a candidate for accession. However, others such as the Netherlands do not consider that Ukraine meets the requirements that are required of any member state of the European club.

Once the formal candidacy of the requesting country has been accepted, the negotiation processn with the agreement of all member states. The Commission is in charge of establishing a framework as a basis for the talks, which must subsequently also be agreed upon by the Twenty-seven. The negotiations are structured in seven thematic chapters: fundamentals (economic criteria, democratic functioning of institutions and public administration reforms), internal market, competition and inclusive growth, green agenda, external relations and resources, agriculture and cohesion.

Concluding the negotiating process in the Once the negotiations in the six areas have been completed, the European Commission must issue its opinion on whether the candidate country meets the requirements imposed by the Twenty-seven and can become one more member of the Union. On the basis of this opinion, the Member States unanimously decide to close the negotiation process.

At this point, it is the turn of the European Parliament, which must also give its consent. After this process, all that remains is for all EU member states and the candidate country sign and ratify the Accession Treaty.
