The Denver Broncos are not dead yet. After a 3-0 start to the season, four straight losses convinced everyone it was a mirage. The Broncos then beat the Washington soccer team and the Dallas Cowboys in consecutive weeks to return to 5-4, just half a game back in a fully tied AFC West. For the third consecutive week, they will play an NFC East team in the Philadelphia Eagles, who are second in the division despite a 3-6 record.
The Eagles have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season. They have been able to stay competitive against players like the Buccaneers and Chargers, but they can’t seem to shut out the teams that are better on paper. The offense still appears to be under the command of Jalen Hurts, who doesn’t make heartbreaking mistakes but doesn’t dazzle either. The result is a difficult team to understand, one that is not as bad as its record, but it is hard to imagine it being much better.
This game has a lot of potential to be the kind of soccer that people say they like. Teddy Bridgewater and Hurts are two quarterbacks who generally won’t lose games to you, but there’s a clear defensive disparity. The Broncos are sixth in the NFL in total defense, while the Eagles are in 15th place. The Broncos are also giving up 17 points per game to the Eagles’ 24, so Hurts will have to play well against a defense that did. That Dak Prescott seemed extremely confused last week.
For the Eagles, DeVonta Smith is coming off one of his best games as a professional, catching five passes for 116 yards and a touchdown, his second of the season. Smith and Hurts haven’t always had a perfect connection, but maybe they can cement some consistency at Empower Field at Mile High.
