No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 Wisconsin travel to Soldier Field to start the Shamrock Series on Saturday.
Irish quarterback fighter Jack Coan will face the Badgers for the first time since transferring from Wisconsin in 2020. He made the decision to leave the Badgers after sustaining a broken foot in 2020, and coach Paul Chryst followed forward with developing quarterback Graham. Mertz. Since leaving Wisconsin, Coan has completed 62 of 98 passes for 828 yards and added eight touchdowns in three games.
Although Notre Dame is 10-0-2 at the historic Chicago stadium, Wisconsin is favored by 6.5 points, according to FanDuel. The Fighting Irish are likely to have a hard time gaining ground, but they may have better luck driving the ball through the air. With an average of 276 passing yards per game and 13.4 yards per play, the transfer quarterback can easily hit a series of touchdowns with tight end Michael Mayer.
Badgers’ second defense, which only allowed 66 rushing yards in two games, will likely make several major saves against the Fighting Irish. Linebacker Jack Sanborn leads the Wisconsin defense with six total tackles and a sack for seven yards, followed later by linebacker Nick Herbing, who has four tackles and 1.5 sacks for 10 yards.
Graham Mertz and Wisconsin’s offense will likely be put to the test by Notre Dame’s top defender Kyle Hamilton. The safety totals 21 tackles and three interceptions in three games, and is expected to close out the passing game. As Mertz continues to fight driving through the field through the air, he is dependent on racer Chez Mellusi. Through the Badgers’ first two meetings, Mellusi totaled 265 yards and two touchdowns on 51 carries. With Hamilton putting constant pressure on Mertz, Mellusi may be Wisconsin’s best chance to score points on the board.
