What do I do if the ATM does not give me the money or my card is swallowed?


The OCU has launched several recommendations so that these situations can be solved

You have gone to withdraw cash from your bank’s ATM and it turns out that after typing in the amount and seeing that the operation has been carried out successfully, the money does not come out of the ATM. You panic, and rightly so. What can you do? The Organization of Consumers and Users has launched a series of warnings and forms of action in case this situation occurs. There are users who, after requesting their money at the ATM, even give them a different amount than the one they requested… even though the transaction receipt shows the amount requested, they point out. Well, the OCU tells you how to act.

The causes can be many:

It may simply be an operational failure of the ATM.

It is also possible that the ATM has run out of bills and is therefore unable to supply them.

But it could also happen that the ATM has been fraudulently manipulated: the thieves block the cash dispenser using some device that prevents the money from leaving and when the consumer leaves thinking that it is a technical error, the scammer withdraws the lock device and take the money. This is what is known as cash trapping.

The cashier has not given me the money

Check that the ATM cash exit slot is not blocked.

If the incident occurs during office hours and the branch is open, report the problem to any of the employees as soon as possible.

If the branch is closed or it is an ATM not located in a bank branch, do not leave without your money: first call the incident assistance telephone number that should appear on the ATM. Try to be offered a solution and request that they give you an incident number before your claim.

In the event that your bank is different from the entity that owns the ATM, also inform them of what happened.

Take photos, if possible, and write down the details of the ATM, as well as the time the transaction was made.

If the cashier has issued a receipt for the transaction, save it. In case you requested to see it on screen, maybe you can take a photo of that information.

Check the charges and credits in the checking account. If a charge appears for the amount not received and it is not regularized after a few days, claim your entity.

The cashier has swallowed my card

Most likely there is a technical problem. Power outages could also cause this effect.

It is possible that the card is retained because there is an incident with it: it is expired or blocked.

Another possibility is that you have made a mistake several times when entering the PIN, and for security the ATM retains the card.

In this case, it is advisable to block the affected card by calling the phone number provided for this by the card issuer. It is usually also possible to block cards temporarily through mobile applications.
