What does “have empathy” mean and how to develop it


Empathy is the ability of a person to understand and understand anotherespecially when she goes through a difficult and troubled moment, according to Psicoglobal. In other words, it is our ability to “put ourselves in the shoes” of others.

In this way, we could say that empathy can be developed by all people, but not at the same level in all cases. Some may be less empathetic than others, and this may be troubled for them. However, this can be solved relatively easily.

What is empathy?

Empathy can be defined as the feeling of identification with someone or the ability to share the feelings of another. It is a key piece of emotional intelligence and is associated with understanding, support, and active listening.

With empathy it is possible understand a person’s feelings and emotions, as much as in a good or a bad moment. From this, the empathic individual has it easier to relate to that person and to do it in the best way.

Empathy resembles compassion, the feeling of a person who not only understands the suffering of another, but also wants to put an end to it. In other terms, empathy is a prerequisite for compassion, but you are not always compassionate.

How to develop our empathy?

Enjoying empathy will help us to relate better with people, which will greatly benefit our social development. In this sense, there are ways that we have within our reach to become more empathetic people.

Fine-tune active listening

Active listening is a communication technique that makes it easier for us to know how to listen and understand what the other person is telling us and thus transmit what we have understood.

Active listening is a characteristic of empathic people by allowing them understand what others are telling them and communicate it appropriately through feedback, without interference or misunderstandings in between and that damage communication.

Live without prejudice

Empathic people are rarely judgmental, they tend to respect and tolerate the actions and thoughts of others while communicating them to them. They take great pains to understand those actions, even if they don’t agree with them.

Disregarding our prejudices has its own difficulties, but doing so allows us get out of ourselves and understand the motivations of others.

Understand ourselves

It is difficult to be empathetic and understand the actions and feelings of others if we do not start with understand what we do and feel.

Knowing each other first can give us the tools to better understand others, understanding their differences and having more sensitivity when dealing with them.

Empathy can help us understand people who are going through a difficult time in their life, or to put ourselves in the shoes of people who feel that they cannot get ahead, having their self-esteem and mental health diminished. In this sense, it is a skill that we could develop for the good of ourselves and others.
