As “difficult” as “meditated” and cooked over low heat. This has been the decision of the moralejana Alba Sánchez (September 9, 1991) to say goodbye to the Spanish volleyball team. After more than 160 international caps behind her back, the Extremaduran libero, by her own decision, will not sponsor the generational change that can already be seen in the women’s national team, which these days is concentrated in the Sant Cugat High Performance Center to prepare for the League European without the presence of what has been one of the fixtures in the last two decades.

«The truth is that it has been a difficult decision, but it is something that I had been thinking about for many months. I already started to consider it when I finished last summer with the national team. I think when in doubt, it’s best to step aside. It would not seem fair to me to continue when you do not have the same motivation, “he explains TODAY.

Alba Sánchez, who is spending these days with her family in the Cáceres town of Moraleja after recently proclaiming herself runner-up in the Iberdrola League with Gran Canaria, advocates prioritizing aspects of her personal life, especially to think about her future work: «There have been many summers one hundred percent with concentrations of several months, with many training sessions and competitions. That eventually runs out. I needed to rest and spend time with my family.” The professional player, who still intends to continue at the highest level, will dedicate part of her time to building a professional future outside of sport: “I don’t plan to leave volleyball in the short term, but I like to think about the future and I’m going to try to oppose in the Canary Islands. At the moment I am in my life, and after many changes in previous years, I would like to stabilize myself.

What memory do you have of your time in the Spanish team? “Without a doubt, I remember when we managed to qualify for the European Championship in Romania. It is something that had cost us a lot in recent years. Then being able to go to that European championship in 2019 was the best moment.”

Regarding the current situation of the Spanish team, Alba Sánchez recognizes that complicated times are ahead due to the generational change: “Now there is going to be a difficult change. I already experienced it in my own flesh when Pascual started in the national team. It is very complicated because the level in Europe is high, but I hope that the girls who make it to the national team have the same enthusiasm and desire to work.”

Regarding the merely sporting, Alba Sánchez says she feels in a good moment: «We have the thorn of having finished runners-up. Last year we managed to win the league and now it hasn’t been possible, but they have been two very good years at a sporting level. I feel very good there, both in the team and on the island.” Although her continuity has not yet been made official, Alba Sánchez will remain linked to the Canarian club this coming season.

From her successful professional career, both in Spain and abroad, the moralejana has fond memories of her season at the Arroyo. However, it is difficult for him to find the right circumstances to join an Extremaduran team before his retirement: «That year in Arroyo I was very happy and if an opportunity arose that would be ideal, of course I would love it, but now my intention is to stabilize myself in the Canary Islands”.
