When is Russell Wilson’s return vs. Seahawks? NFL schedule release reveals date of Broncos’ trip to Seattle

Numerous NFL quarterbacks were traded during the 2022 NFL offseason, but no deal was more surprising than that of Russell Wilson.

Wilson spent a decade with the Seahawks after being a third-round pick by the team and led them to win in Super Bowl 48. He was a decade-long starter for Seattle and even despite some rumblings of disconnect between him and coach Pete Carroll, it never seemed like he was going to leave the team.

However, the Seahawks and Wilson did, in fact, decide to split up on eve of NFL free agency. Seattle dealt their long-time start to Denver so that he could play with the Broncos. The Seahawks received three players and five draft picks in exchange for Wilson and a fourth-round pick.

NFL TRADE GRADES: Why the Seahawks won the Russell Wilson trade

There doesn’t seem to be much bad blood toward Wilson from Seahawks fans, but naturally, his departure will sting. After all, it leaves a gaping hole at the quarterback position, which is new for the team. Seattle has had relative stability at the position over the last two decades thanks to the presence of Wilson and Matt Hasselbeck.

Now, Seattle doesn’t have anything coming at quarterback. The team will likely give former Denver second-round pick Drew Lock a chance to provide himself at the position as it begins to rebuild, but it will be hard for him to effectively replace Wilson.

So, though the faithful Seahawks don’t harbor much ill will toward Wilson, they would certainly still like a crack at revenge. Seattle will get that, as they are scheduled to play against Denver in 2022. The game will be played in Seattle, and that could be an emotional one for Wilson, as he returns to the spot of some of his greatest triumphs in a new uniform.

This game taking place early in the season will benefit both the Broncos and the Seahawks. Wilson will be able to get his return to Seattle out of the way and not have it hanging over his head at any point during the season.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks will have a better chance to upset the Broncos in Week 1 than they will later in the season. why? Because Wilson may still be developing chemistry with his new receiving weapons and coaching staff.

Wilson’s return will be the best storyline during the Seattle vs. Denver game, but it won’t be the only point of intrigue. It is also a rematch of Super Bowl 48, a contest that the Seahawks won 43-8 thanks to strong outings from Wilson, Marshawn Lynch and the “Legion of Boom”-led defense. The Broncos will have a chance to avenge that defeat with Wilson now on their side.
