When will the ITV start to review the mandatory ADAS systems in your car

When a windshield is replaced and a new one is installed, the cameras and sensors of the ADAS systems have to be recalibrated to ensure that they provide accurate information to the security systems.

Currently, most of the new cars that circulate on our roads already incorporate a driving assistance system, called ADAS. And ten of them will begin to be mandatory in homologated cars in the European Union from July 2022. Therefore, it is crucial that these systems, which can take control of the vehicle in certain situations, work at the perfection throughout the life of the vehicle. In fact, one of the recommendations made by the
International Automobile Federation (FIA) to the European Parliament is that these safety systems have clear maintenance and calibration processes.

In the event of an accident that affects any of its elements, after the repair it will be necessary to recalibrate the cameras and sensors so that they work correctly, something that especially affects the windshield. When it is replaced and a new one is installed, the cameras and sensors of the ADAS systems have to be recalibrated to ensure that they provide accurate information to the security systems. This recalibration must be carried out by professionals with the appropriate training, experience and technology, according to
Carglass. Another important aspect is the verification of its correct operation in technical vehicle inspections (ITV), something that is not yet being done.

For
William Magazmanaging director of
AECA-ITV «The first step has already been taken, with the entry into force of the Execution Regulation 2019/621 of the European Commission, which obliges vehicle manufacturers to provide all the necessary data to be able to carry out the ITV». With this information, the ITVs will now have the technical possibility of verifying these systems. The next step is for the Ministry of Industry to prepare the inspection procedure manual for the ADAS systems, which will subsequently be applied by the ITV. From AECA-ITV they request that “this manual be done as soon as possible”. It is estimated that the new inspection manual will be published in mid-2023 and it is expected that it will already include aspects related to ADAS systems.

Highlight that ADAS systems are mainly composed of a set of sensors (mainly cameras, radar and ultrasound), a unit or ‘brain’ that merges and ‘interprets’ the information provided by them, and the wiring and connections necessary to unite them. From the user’s point of view, these systems do not require any special attention or maintenance. It is the official services, or authorized workshops, who electronically check that there are no faults in the system, according to the scheduled maintenance in the service book.

Therefore, in the event of an accident that affects any of its elements, after the repair, the cameras and sensors must be recalibrated so that they work correctly. This particularly affects the windshield, which houses some of the sensors for the ADAS systems. When a windshield is replaced, the cameras must be removed from the broken glass and mounted on the new one. Once installed, these systems need to be recalibrated to ensure they work with maximum accuracy and provide the correct information to security systems.
