“College GameDay” will head into its third neutral game of the season on Saturday when it sets up outside of Soldier Field in Chicago to see the preview of No. 12 Notre Dame against No. 18 Wisconsin.
Additionally, Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard, David Pollack and company will preview their third consecutive game involving a Big Ten team, following previous episodes that included Auburn-Penn State and Iowa State- Iowa. Both teams should see this as something they must win, considering the implications of the college football tie that involves a loss. A loss to Wisconsin (1-1) would immediately end any chance the Badgers have of making the playoffs, and in one year Ohio State appears to be the weakest it has had in years.
The same could be said for Notre Dame which, despite its 3-0 record, has dropped several spots in the polls due to lackluster performances against Florida State, Toledo and Purdue. The Fighting Irish may get to the playoffs with a loss, but their overall schedule doesn’t do them any favors if they lose.

A potential playoff spot isn’t the only story from Saturday’s game: It will also be a meeting between Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan and his former team. Coan threw for 3,278 yards and 23 touchdowns to eight interceptions in three seasons at Madison, Wisc. – including two years as a starter in 2018 and ’19 – but did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced his decision to transfer in the offseason and has made an immediate impact for the Fighting Irish, throwing for 828 yards and eight touchdowns on two interceptions.
The Fighting Irish will likely need every bit of their skill to make plays against Wisconsin, which despite its loss to Penn State earlier this year has been strong on defense, allowing just 11.5 points per game (two touchdowns on the year).
With that, here’s everything you need to know as “College GameDay” comes to Chicago to preview the game:
