After weeks of waiting, Pedro Castillo was officially proclaimed president of Peru, a task that he will face as of July 28 with a part of the country against it.

The National Elections Jury (JNE) finally resolved the challenges presented by its rival, Keiko Fujimori, after the tight elections on June 6 and declared Castillo the winner.

The already elected president will face strong resistance after an election and a subsequent battle that have shown the country’s division.

And he will do so under heavy scrutiny and with doubts about the performance of a man new to politics.
