Google Doodle celebrates Sơn Đoòng Cave

Google Doodle celebrates the 13th anniversary of Sơn Đoòng Cave, which is the world’s largest cave based in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Vietnam.

Today’s date, April 14th, marks exactly 13 years since the official discovery of the cave on April 14th 2009.

This is the first time the natural wonder is honored on Google’s homepage and the doodle is displayed in several countries across the globe.

Sơn Đoòng Cave is honored on the homepages of Vietnam, UK, Sweden, Singapore, Greece and many more.

More about the cave

Even though it was discovered only 13 years ago, Vietnam’s natural wonder is believed to have formed about two to five million years ago.

Local farmer Ho Khanh found the entrance of Sơn Đoòng Cave in 1990 but it remained undiscovered until 2008 when he returned to retrace his steps. Howard and Deb Limbert of the British Cave Research Association initiated the official opening of the cave in 2009.

The cave is named the largest one in the world by the Guinness World Records, the Association World Record and World Kings. It boasts a width of 150m, a height of more than 200m and a length of up to nearly 9m.

Moreover, Sơn Đoòng Cave is also home to the world’s third largest cave, En cave, and includes underground rivers and rare flora and fauna for visitors to enjoy.

How can you visit the cave

The Google Doodle has been made in collaboration with Vietnam’s National Administration of Tourism in an effort to boost tourism in the country after the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Son Doong expedition is organized between January to August every year and takes four days and three nights to complete.

The itinerary includes overnight camping, swimming, trying local cuisine and numerous adventurous activities while you explore the wonders of the caves.

If you want to find more general information and other articles about the place, make sure to check Sơn Đoòng Cave’s official website.
