WWE Crown Jewel 2021: ratings, results

WWE returns to Saudi Arabia with a night full of matches for the 2021 edition of Crown Jewel.

The event will be headlined by Roman Reigns defending his WWE Universal Championship against returning Brock Lesnar, as both challenger and champion try to figure out which side Paul Heyman is on.

WWE Champion Big E will defend her title against former champion Drew McIntyre, while Becky Lynch aims to reverse the challenge from both Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair in defense of their SmackDown women’s championship. The Hell in a Cell match returns as Seth Rollins and Edge seek to resolve their differences once and for all, while Goldberg seeks revenge for his son when he faces Bobby Lashley in a No Holds Barred match.

Def. Edge Seth Rollins (Hell in a Cell)

Outside of Reigns-Lesnar, this match has had the best structure and was assumed to be fantastic. Surprisingly, it kicked off Crown Jewel, which meant it could set a high bar for the rest of the show.

That’s exactly what he did when these two became a phenomenal combination of professional wrestling and brutality.

Unsurprisingly, the two started fast and exchanged offensives. With each passing moment, the violence increased.

Everything changed once Rollins escaped a cross submission by driving a piece of steel chair into Edge’s eye. Rollins went so far as to use Edge’s best friend move against him when he nailed it with Christian’s Unprettier. But when Rollins tried to climb up the turnbuckle for a phoenix splash, Edge pushed him like a pinball into the cell and through a table that was positioned below him.

Steel ladders came into the match and Edge hit Rollins with an Edge-O-Matic and crushed him with a turnbuckle chair for a close fall. A parade of his greatest hits continued with a Pedigree from Rollins and a buckle pump and spear from Edge. Running out of ways to get rid of his opponent, Edge introduced a ladder to the match, which is why we now unofficially have a Hell in a Cell and a TLC at the same time.

Rollins reversed a straight superplex on a powerbomb across the table for another close knockdown. A trio of Rollins superkicks led him to wrap a chain around his boot and land another superkick on Edge. An attempt to step onto the sidewalk was countered by Edge pushing a chair into Rollins’s groin. Rollins used both a chain and a brace to apply a cross, but was not satisfied with getting a submission. Instead, he released his grip and slammed Rollins into a chair for the pin.

A fitting conclusion to one of the best rivalries of 2021. If there was a downside, it would be how high the bar was set for the rest of the show. But Edge and Rollins are fantastic rivals and delivered a match that exceeded expectations.
