The German Alexander Zverev, fifth favorite, regained the Madrid Masters 1000 that he already obtained three years ago, at the cost of Matteo Berrettini, outmatched in the match, so far, most important of his career (6-7 (10), 6-4 and 6-3).

The hamburger tennis player, one of the referents of the so-called ‘next gen’, found the prize for his perseverance and solidity throughout the two hours and 42 minutes that lasted a confrontation full of alternatives until the final stretch, when the Italian declined and Zverev took the opportunity to close the game.

It was a frustrating result for Berrettini, winner in Belgrade days ago and who took on the most relevant challenge of his career in a complicated year, conditioned by injuries that hampered his progression.

Zverev, more rich in experience, more used to relevant moments and a greater background like the one that gave him the final of the United States Open last year, the first in a Grand Slam, clinched victory for the fourth time in a Masters 1000 in a reliable serve and in his stability until the end.

The crash was on an indoor track and with the president of the Community of Madrid Isabel Diaz Ayuso between the authorities. The leader of the Popular Party captured part of the attention. Seated in the box next to José Luis Martínez Almeida, mayor of the city, she had to get up to say hello after being acclaimed by the stands.

The rain that fell on Madrid led to the closure of the roof of the Manolo Santana track in the Caja Mágica. Zverev, who had arrived without losing a set, had to straighten the situation before the push of the transalpine.

The meeting was closed. Especially in the first set, with the two fresh players. There was an initial break from the Italian compensated by a subsequent break from the German that led to the tie break. Berrettini led 5-0 but Zverev stalked. There were alternatives. Possibility of a set for both but it was the Italian who resisted, won the sleeve and took advantage.

Zverev reacted who broke in the ninth game of the second quarter, consolidated and equalized the match. In the third Zverev maintained his strength as Berrettini began to waver. The German broke again, in the fifth game and his rival was not able to correct the imbalance. He did not recover and the German closed the victory over the Italian’s service.

Zverev’s third win over Berrettini in the five matches they have completed, all in Masters 1000 tournaments, brought the German’s title ratio to fifteen. It is the second of the year after Acapulco.

He frustrated Berrettini, tenth in the world, with four trophies in his history but none of such relevance.
